Winner of the Best TV Comedy Drama at the 1994 British Comedy Awards, Murder Most Horrid Series One stars Dawn French (The Vicar Of Dibley; French And Saunders) in a variety of guises from one episode to the next - from a Brazilian au pair to a children's TV presenter, a quantum physicist to a fading soap opera star.

An mix of sit-com, crime drama, murder mystery and horror anthology, Murder Most Horrid Series One also boasts the writing talents of Ian Hislop, James Hendrie and Nick Newman and features guest appearances from a host of reknowned British character actors including Bill Paterson, Timothy Spall, Martin Jarvis, Jane Asher, Tony Slattery, Kenneth Cranham, Jim Broadbent and Kathy Burke.

The Case Of The Missing concerns a traffic cop who is promoted to lead the investigation in what appears to be a straightforward murder case but turns out to be anything but. In The Girl From Ipanema, French stars as Brazilian au pair Maria, who while working for a parliamentary candidate and his wife uncovers a heady cocktail of sexual and political intrigue with fatal consequences. Rivalries amongst a group of theatre "luvvies" starring in the whodunnit The Catflap lead to murder in He Died A Death, in which French stars as fading soap star Judy Talent, one of the actresses caught up in the mystery.

Taking the series into the realms of sci-fi, A Determined Woman sees the recently made redundant but still ambitious quantum physicist Rita Proops resolving to carry on her research into time machine construction in her garage. Mrs. Hat And Mrs. Red present a baffling tale of suburban doppelgangers, luxury bath oils, geraniums and, naturally, murder.

But perhaps the most memorable episode of the series, and the one that defined the show for many viewers, the hilarious Murder At Tea Time stars French as Bunty Breslaw, a children's TV presenter who, insanely jealous of her younger colleague and rival, adopts villainous methods to keep her permanently out of the picture.
