Sometimes it isn't the fabric itself that isn't washable, it may be interfacings, buttons, trims, construction etc,

I wash and short spin or drip dry trousers, then I fold them while not quite dry and hang them on the warm radiator, that helps to put the crease in and sometimes they don't need ironing. The direct heat might not be good for pure wool though.

I've washed woollen and silk items many times which have contained labels saying Dry Clean Only. However, I never put them in the washing machine but do them very gently by hand in soapy water that is no more than warm to the hand. Then I gently squeeze the surplus water out and let them drip dry, so it's better to wait until you have a good day for drying outside. And I always press or iron them while still slightly damp as it's the very devil to remove creases from wool once the garment has completely dried. Don't think I've ever had a fatal accident cleaning anything yet and hand washed clothes always somehow seem cleaner than those which have been dry cleaned.

How do you know which ones are or aren't? I'm afraid I'm rather ignorant about fabrics and whether they can be laundered in a WM, handwashed or dry cleaned. Is there a website or even a book about this?

until you get experienced - trial & error seems to be the one - or asking here of course
I know what the person you quoted means tho, I've had small childrens clothes that you are supposed to dry clean!(what before they out grow it lol)
Sometimes its that this particular mix of inks, stitching, fabric hasnt been fully tested so they go for the safe option
I THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I Know
