consomme

Options
I have to have a colonoscopy next week, and the hospital have said that the day before I can have some plain chicken and boiled rice at noon, then only fluids until 7pm, then a bowl of clear consomme with no bits in, then nothing but fluids until the procedure has been done.

Never made or bought consomme before, but it sounds like a grim diet to me! Thank goodness its only for one day. Can anyone recommend either a pleasant tasting consomme from somewhere or a recipe to make one please. I'm not a huge soup fan normally, as I find it can be bland, so ideally something tasty would be great.

Thanks

Consomme is just a plain clear soup, so just proceed as if you were making a stock - boil up a chicken carcass with some leek/onion, celery, carrots, a bayleaf and a sprig of thyme in a few litres of water, then simmer for 2 hours until you have a clear, well flavoured stock. Strain and allow to cool. You could make a beef or vegetable stock if you prefer following the same method.

Thanks Liz. I do know what consomme is, but the thought of drinking chicken stock made in the normal way (or beef for that matter) is very unappealing, as in its unadulterated state it is really quite bland. I was really hoping that someone might be able to suggest something tried and tested which had a little flavour to it, whilst still sticking to the rules.

consomme is really quite a concentrated stock - it should jelly when cold - something that concentrated should be quite tasty, especially after salt is added.
My friend had the same procedure and is seriously jealous - she was not allowed to eat from 2 days before - consomme with 2 days to do, water with 1 day to go and nil by mouth on the day (procedure at 10am)!

A bit of salt and pepper will go a long way to making it taste better.

  • I had a similar procedure a few weeks back now, I could eat jelly and consomme only.....does it mention jelly at all?

Sadly no. I would prefer jelly to consomme I think! The guidelines must vary from hospital to hospital I suspect. I have had a few done in the past, but always at times when I was quite ill, and I don't remember having these guidelines then, but it may be because I was in hospital at the time so they just fed it to me without telling me and I didn't notice!

 Poor her! I wouldn't survive that long without food with two small children to run around after! Would do my waistline some good though!

I know - she did try to go to work but was starting to feel quite faint by the second day and had to come home. Fortunately he OH was able to take time to look after the kids.

Hubby was recommended Bovril on the sheet he had & clear chicken soup - so chicken noodle soup with the noodles strained out is fine, so are oxo's or drinks made with chicken bovril for a change, You could also go for clear veg soups..

I've had a few similar ones, some the same and some with tubes in both directions. Yak! I didn't even bother with anything but water after the chicken/rice, I didn't have much of that either, the whole thought of the procedure put me off to be honest. I didn't feel too bad considering I'd had nothing for 2 days. Suppose it's only like having a bad tummy bug but without being sick. Plenty of water was a must to stay hydrated. Make sure you stick to the sheet, if in doubt after the chicken I'd just have water because if it's not empty enough you might have to have it done again. Maybe that was what put me off having anything the most.

If you have to take the nice medicine to clear out before you go make sure you stay near a loo after taking it!
One day I might be more organised...........
