moving home council tax question

hello,

I paid the council tax out right last year and am now moving home after renting.

I want to see if the next tenant should be giving me money for the council tax.

Is the next council tax due in April ? if so he should be giving me 1 months council tax

Many thanks
Lee

Yes, it's April to March. Might be April 5th for the tax year, in which case he'd owe you more like 80% of a month's.
Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!

The council tax account in your name would be closed and a new one raised in the new tenants name - you will get a refund of the overpaid amount and the tenant would get a new bill..

The Council Tax year runs from 01 april to 31 march.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

you should just contact your council tax office and let them know you are moving out and give them an address to send the refund to.
They are usually fairly quick and should send you a cheque for the refund.

  • And if you are moving to a dwelling in the same Local Authority (LA) they will raise a new demand notice for the remainder of this council tax year as well. They may not even send you a cheque/refund money but use it to offset your liability against the new dwelling.
