Dad's 65th Birthay - ideas for present

Options
Evening All,

I have no idea what to get my Dad for hs 65th birthday. My brother is chipping in and our budget is £70 -£100 tops.

He's not into gardening, has no time for reading books, he's not particularly active but drives, doesn't drink (much) or smoke. He's into railways but this is also his job (publishing raliway books) so ideally we'd like to keep away from this for my mothers sake ;)

The only thing I can come up with is a portrait of his grandchildren but it is also my M&D's 40th WA later this year so I was saving that for then.

So what can we get him???? Has anybody bought for a man like this recently? Any suggestions greatfully received.

  • What about a night away.It doesn't have to be a posh hotel. There are some lovely B&B's around.
I'm doing this for my Dad(and Mam of course) for his 65th in August.
Start by doing what's necessary, then do what's possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible:j
Christmas is not a time but a state of mind :xmassmile
Trying.....Very trying- as my DH would say
    Loving de-cluttering
  • Had similar situation last year in the family. My brother, sister and I clubbed together and bought him a plane ride from a local airfield, it lasted about an hour and he really enjoyed it.

Wher do you live? Maybe that would help us!
fF it is your Dads birthday you mum would probably put up with anything train related as long as she did not have to have that for their annversary. More info required.
  • My Dad was 65 in November.
We got him a Nintendo Wii and he loves it. He enjoys a game of bowling before bed most night!!

annual membership for him and your mum to something like

    National Trust?
The mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.:o

A winner listens, a loser just waits until it is their turn to talk:)
  • Thanks for all your replies folks. I'm still unsure as what to get my Dad. My brother has just told me that he has bought him some DVD's so he'll not be chipping in with me. Thanks for the notice bro:p .

I'm finding it tough really deciding what to get him. My Dad is recovering from brain surgery which he had just before xmas. He has all his facilties and is confident to drive short distances but is not walking too far due to a back complaint.

Littlerenhen - I had thought of this myself but I'm unsure how much walking he'd be able to do whilst there. I'll quiz my mum tomorrow and see what she thinks. There are quite a few NT palces locally.

bafty crastard - The thought of him playing a wii :rotfl: .

seashore321 - He's in Stockport. He's probably done everything train related, within reason, but if you have ideas :).

sharonace - Great idea but not for my dad considering his health issues.

nitnurse-not2 - This might be the way to go. For a previous birthday my Bro & I contributed towards a trip to Paris for them. I think he'd be up for a trip away but will quiz my mum to see how the land lays, so to speak.

Thanks again for you ideas. I'll be quizzing mum tomorrow :D

Do you have a steam railway anywhere near you? Many do 'experience' days, where you spend a day working on the railway, which may actually include driving a steam train.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"

Thanks for the suggestion MITS. My Dad wouldn't be able to "work" due to his health. He's able to visit places and sit and watch but not work. Actually, just thought, he complained about his back hurting after we went on a miniture railway last week so most of the "little railways" would be ruled out too. We used to like going on the Ffestiniog Railway and all the little ones in N.Wales when we were younger. Pesky back problems!

I'm going to suggest NT membership to my mum later on today and hope she likes the sound of it. I can get £20 cashback via quidco  My budget has obviously been halved since my brother is no longer contributing so NT would do nicely. Fingers crossed :)
  • And the winner is..............NT membership, Yay!

    Thanks everyone :)
