I got my MR Fast bake & made a loaf today on the 3 hour programme - it is horrible and not fit for the birds! I followed the recipe from the guide I got down to a tee, and its moist & salty. Other wise its OK. Back to the drawing board.

Have you ever tried making the bread by hand? I have never used a breadmaker, and I cannot remember the last time a loaf was unfit for human consumption, let alone the birds:rotfl:
If you learn the basics, by hand baking, then it may help the machine baking?

Has anyone noticed the price of flour has suddenly gone up in the supermarkets? It was £1.60 in my local Morrisons yesterday for the Allinsons premium 1.5 kilo bag. I was paying around a £1 for that before Christmas. I used to get the 3 kilo bag for around £1.60.

Only in school about 22 yrs ago!!! I now realise what mistake I've done. 2 tablespoons of salt instead of 2 teaspoons:rotfl:!! How stupid am I!!!? It was all tbsp till I got to the salt & though I saw it was that.......a smaller loaf in now.....and I think I put in a tbsp measurement :o

You do need to put the ingredients in the machine in a certain order, but this can differ according to the machine. i.e Our Panasonic seems to be a reverse order to the instructions for our old machine. I don't know of a sugar-free version as all bread I have ever made, either by breadmaker or by hand has needed just that tiny bit of sugar (usually only between 1 and 2 teaspoons) to feed the yeast so that it rises properly. I think it would be well worth you seeing if you can get hold of the breadmaker manual for your model as that will contain lots of recipes as well as general instructions for how much, what order, how long, etc.

The water should go in either first or last; whichever time you choose, the yeast should go in at the other, so that it keeps away from the water until mixed with the flour.

Your yeast says "not suitable for bread machines" because it needs dissolving in water before use; other kinds are available that can be mixed directly with flour, and are slightly easier to use.

Sugar is completely optional, so feel free to leave it out of any recipe. There's only every a tiny amount in bread though, so don't expect it to make any significant difference to the nutritional properties of the loaf.

Here's a suggestion for a first attempt using what you already have. Weigh 500g of flour and put it in the machine with a tablespoon of vegetable oil (just guess rather than trying to measure exactly) and a teaspoon of salt. Dissolve half a tablespoon of your yeast in 320ml of warm water (only because of the sort you have), then add to the other ingredients. Set the machine going on whatever program you can.

I'd second the suggestion to find a proper manual if you can though!
  • thank you both
the woman i had the breadmaker off has found the instructions
i'm trying a different way see if that works
