Getting Morgage Arrangement Fees Back?

We were going to buy a house and then for various reasons it fell through and we cancelled the mortgage with Natwest.

We paid various fees, survey fees, admin fees and an optional mortgage arrangement fee up front - instead of having it added on to the mortgage.

We obviously don't get the survey fee back, because we had the survey done and we don't get the admin and other fees back.

But apparently we don't get back the £500 optional up front mortgage arrangement fee, even though it's optional and we didn't even start the mortgage!

Can this be right? Is it legal? If you can get back £20 bank charges on late payments cause they are overcharging. Surely you should be able to get back £500 when all they have done is a credit check and sent you some papers?

Any help would be great cause it's alot of money and it really don't seem fair.

Thanks :)
