Old style mothers day present

Options
sorry if this has been asked before, I did a search but didn't find the sort of thing I was thinking of. I'd like to get an 'old style' mothers day pres for mine, I think in the good old days a special cake was baked and young girls in service were allowed home for the day and picked a bunch of primroses so I was looking for those sorts of ideas.

Has anyone any thoughts for an old fashioned pres?

Thanks Liz

  • how about a photo frame with a nice piccie on. you could probably pick up a cheap plain wood one then decorate it yourself, with a nice photo in.
Or if your really clever make one yourself.

how about plant some bulbs in her garden (or is it too late to plant them?)
  • When we were kids we used to make mum breakfast in bed (half cooked eggs, burnt toast etc) followed by a puppet show we created out of cuddly toys etc. That went on til we were teenagers, and then we started buying gifts etc in earnest. My mum still remembers the puppet shows with great pleasure though! Last year my youngest made my present of a red lego rose and "happy mothers day" made out of lego. The most touching thing is that he has NEVER taken the lego back to make another toy for himself, despite being a lego addict to this day. Dont know if it is old style, but it warmed by heart far more than an overpriced hand tied imported bunch of daffs ever could!

The original tradition was that servants were allowed to pick a bunch of flowers from the gardens of big houses and take them home to their mothers and children would pick wild flowers. Depending on when Mother's Day fell, there could be a lot of choice or little. A simnel cake would also be baked and given. There's a recipe for an easy simnel cake here.

Here we have daffodils and primroses in bloom so either of those would be appropriate. Pick a bunch yourself (assuming you don't have to have them delivered) and perhaps tie them up with some raffia, string or a pretty ribbon, depending on what you have handy.
