Returning John Lewis sofa - how was it?

I would like to buy a sofa from John Lewis but have concerns about it fitting into my flat. Having measured, remeasured and measured again I think it will fit, but am concerned that I might have got something wrong. John Lewis have stated that if the sofa doesn't fit they will charge 20% of the sofa price (£200) to take it away again. I think this is pretty extortionate!

Was wondering if anyone else had experienced returning a sofa to John Lewis if it doesn't fit?

Thanks!

  • Is the sofa you're ordering made to order? If it is, then such a deduction isn't unusual. Also consider it does cost them money to get this delivered to you and to take it back, even though delivery is "free".
  • Sofa is just bog standard - nothing customised. A quick look on their website reveals that "Where large products are returned as unwanted, we reserve the right to make a charge of £50 to cover the collection cost".

Also "If the product returned is not in fully resaleable condition or the packaging is damaged, we reserve the right to refuse a refund on the item, or deduct up to 20% of the original selling price from the refund amount".

Think the lady in customer services might have got confused. Will speak to them again. And will be getting a responsible adult to help with the scissors and newspaper!

I just ordered and had delivered a sofa from JL.

Like you I measured and double checked but until you get the item in you can never be 100% certain. I wanted the sofa upstairs and the delivery guys said that if I removed the packaging and the sofa was damaged in any way taking it up, then I would be unable to return it.

I took the risk and removed the packaging as it was too bulky with the packaging. Luckily it did get up there!!
  • I've discovered that John Lewis in Oxford Street (can't speak for the rest of the country!) does a service whereby you tell them what piece of furniture you want and the delivery guys come over to measure up to tell you if they think it will get in. This service is free for a 6 hour time slot (i.e. 7am -1pm). I paid £19 to get a two hour slot from 7am to 9am.

Hope this helps others with their John Lewis sofa questions!
