Going Green, Your throwing money away." Litter ally "

Since the introduction of enforced recycling by most councils in England i personally have been made to feel like an unpaid refuse operative. Don't get me wrong i am in favour of recycling but i do feel the public has been conned in some way with the above introduction.
Firstly we sort the paper, metals and plastic and pop them into their appropriate wheelie bin then the council comes along and takes them away to recycle, now they get paid for the paper and the metals they recycle but do they deduct the income earned from your waste off your yearly bill, do they hell, what they do is to have the cheek to charge you more next year for taking it away.
So my question is this...
How can i claw back a slight amount of that money i am donating to the council, even if it only amounts to £100 per year.

CAN YOU

You forgot to add the petrol and transport costs when you have to carry the stuff to the recycling centre because the Council won't collect cardboard/wood/plastic any more !

I am completely in favour of recycling and waste reduction, but I really believe that many of the "measures" that Local Authorities have been forced into are actually wasting more resources than they purport to save.

It would be interesting to know which council you are reffering to as Rochdale council still collect cardboard and plastic.

    Cheers

  • I'm quite happy they do it, means I don't have to drive long distances to the recycling centres. :)

I seriously doubt that the council makes any money from recycling.

    Hy Lynne

Do you honestly believe that a council would send all the Cans and paper to a recycling depot where they are melted and pulped for nothing ?
I don't think so, although it is an invaluable service and i am in favour of recycling, if a council could earn revenue from it then it will.

I think some people have a strange idea of what a council is for. It's not a profit-making body. Most of the services it offers lose money, hence having to get subsidies from the government, council tax from residents and business rates from businesses.

If a council COULD make money from recycling and thus reduce taxes I'd be in favour. Wouldn't you?
  • Erm, please don't take this as a nasty remark - but you might want to use a spell and grammar check on your posts and website - people tend to take things a lot more seriously if they are correct.

West Wilts also empty my main "dustbin" every two weeks, in the name of recycling; it smells pretty high already, what it will be like in July .......!!

    My council take cardboard.

Missed my last fortnightly collection as was abroad, so it is now 4 weeks and likewise it smells badly despite my wife using masses of plastic bags to neatly package all rubbish - most environmentally friendly.

To prevent the problem I am designing a refrigerated wheelie bin. To keep the environmentalists happy it will of course be powered by solar panels and wind turbines!! I expect to be nominated for a Nobel prize!

Absolutely brilliant; I assume the surplus power will be fed back into the National Grid and the profit you make will pay your gas bill !
