Father has lost contributions

My father came to the UK from Italy in 1960. He has paid full NI contributions from then until he reached 65 in 2002. The pension service contacted him stating how much they were going to pay him via his state pension and claimed he had only been assesed from 1972 onwards. When my father asked themn why they claimed that in 1972 they changed their system and had no record of his contributions before that date. My father fears that due to these missing 12 years he doesn't receive a full pension.
What I would like to know is if anyone can inform if these missing 12 years are going to affect the payments, and if so how can this be challenged to allow any missing money to be paid retrospectively?

How much less than the full basic pension does he receive? From 1960 to 2002 is 42 years which is not quite enough for a full pension, but if they are only counting from 1972 he will be losing a huge chunk.
My husband has 37 years contributions from 1970 to 2007 and receives £75.95 per week at present. He also has additions for SERPS etc.0 -
my father is married so should be receiving about £650 per month but only received £5950

If his wife is over state pension age the money will be paid directly to her not to him.
If she is under pension age, he needs to make a claim for "adult dependant's allowance", it's not paid automatically.
[But what has this to do with missing contributions?]Trying to keep it simple...

£650 per month is more than a basic State Pension, even with an extra allowance for a wife. How did you work out he should have £650? With 42 years contributions he would get less than that, but I don't know how they work it out.
He should be getting it every 4 weeks, not monthly, or he can be paid every week if he requests it.
Full pension based on 49 years contributions is £87.30 per week, plus a Maximum £52.30 for a wife, so £139.60 per week. That is equal to £7259.20 per annum, so a monthly equivalent of £604.930 -
If he never had any other pensions he would also be eligible for Serps/S2P, which can be more than 10k a year for those with a full record and a reasonable salary. He seems to be getting 7140, doesn't sound unreasonable.
How old is his wife?
What does his DWP state pension documentation say?Trying to keep it simple...
