after a payrise, but don't know which way to go about it

ive been working as a carer for 9 months now, when i joined i was told that i would beable to work on my nvq 4 and that after 6 months id have another meeting to asatain wether i have gained the experiance to quantify getting a payrise.

i had 5 years in experiance in care before but this was the mental health side and this that im working is learning disabilties but still pretty much same thing.
since then the manager that promised me this has now left, and a new manager has come in, my previous manager didnt document anything so i can understand i have to forget about promises he made and now get everything in writting.
but my new manager has said they will try get my pay increased to match others in my position which has not been done yet, but when they have been doing interviews for more people, in which i currently do they are offering upto another £1 per hour.

Ive done loads for the company and saved them £££'s and go on all the trainning, in my eyes i thought i was showing initative and that i wanted to go places within the company.

I now want to try taking next step basicly asking for more money so i can personally finance doing the nvq 4 myself.

any suggestions as to what to say or do???

In my experience, if you don't ask for it, you're not gonna get it.

I worked for this company for 1 1/2 years and the best they could do when I left was to give me "the same" as the other company I was switching to.

What other options do you have in terms of the job market?

i was also gonna right a letter also to make it more formal.

job prospects in my area are crap
