Green jobs for the uninitiated!

Hi
I am in a 30hours/week accounts assistant role and hating every minute I am there. I sort of drifted into accounts (at very low level) about 15 years ago and have neither got out of it or moved up the ladder since - last 13 years have worked p/t as children meant I chose to put work lower on the priority list.
Now 43 and would like to seek a better job but ultimately know I hate what I am doing so do not want to seek to progress there. Current job is in a hotel which employs around 55/60 staff and I am currently in the top 15% or so of longest standing staff (I will have been there 1 year tomorrow). I would dearly love to resign tomorrow as the pressure at work is steadily building and I am feeling increasingly useless and unable to cope. Sleep is becoming a rather rare commodity at present.
What I feel I would love to do is something along the line of environmental projects, something I could feel passionate about and actually want to turn up to in the morning, but I have no idea where to start as I have absolutely no experience or qualification in this area.
Also aware I would need to drop in salary - not on anything too exciting at present but earning £17000 pro rata so minimum wage would still represent a big drop.
ANyone got any ideas about how to find out more or what possible evening classes could be useful? Still need to work round mortgage/kids/elderly parents etc.
Love
Katyk

  • I don't have any specific advice on environmental jobs, but I am currently researching new careers and am finding https://www.learndirect.co.uk to be helpful. It has job profiles, with average pay rates and skills/qualifications that you may need. You can also call them to speak to a careers adviser - haven't tried this as yet, still trying to narrow down my choices. Hope that gives you some help.
