leavers interview

Hiya
I have handed my notice in at work because I just do not like my job, (this is either the best thing I have done, or the most stupid thing I have done lol) I have tried, been there 18 months, but it's not getting any better and for the sake of my health and sanity i feel that I should get out while I can still walk and talk

I have now been sent an email telling me I have a leavers interview and please fill in the attatched form, to be sent back before the interview.

Well, have looked at the form and never in my life have I been expected to do an exam before I leave a job!

It asks about the job I am going to...easy that one cos don't have one yet. Then I have to fill in loads of other stuff...like ticking if my department fills the boxes for certain values the company go by or do they need development. I wants to know why I want to leave, why the company has not met my expectations etc etc etc etc and etc ( told you it was a long form)

My question is...do I have to fill in this form? I have already had my last review with my manager. She put down that since my last review I have have handed in notice as am not happy and I feel they cannot do anything else to help me, am not sure that this is really how I feel, but am at the stage where I just want to go!, She has told me I have to fill in this form.

The only thing I worry about is on the front of the many question form it says this will be held on my personnel file. I feel that if I fill in the form as I see, if I then apply for another job and they get a reference, anything I put on the form could go against me. I dont hate the firm I work for, just feel that they were slightly 'economical with the truth' when describing my job description. They used to hold recruitment days and everyone got the same job description even though duties varied greatly between the department you eventually ended up in. Oh and really you didnt actually know what department it was until you started

Apart from this I don't have any problem with the company, I actually temped there before taking this perm position, but what I do, its not me, had I realised before I would not have taken the job........SO HELP, do I have to fill in the form, if I do, shall I just tick the good boxes?

You do not have to fill in the form - most HR professionals use these to get feedback from employees on how the company is performing in the development etc of employees.

    Tell her to shove it.
Treat others as you would like to be treated :A

I agree with all except the above.;) It's always best to leave on good terms.;)

Good Luck with your job searching/new job.

    Second Nile's comment!

You don't have to complete the form, but it sounds as if you might have some useful feedback for the company.

Exit interviews are great tools to find out what's really going on. Yes, a leaver might be bitter about being treated badly, but usually there will be constructive information which can be used to assess company practices, confidence in management.

But it is up to you whether you fill it in or not.

well done on taking the plunge - very brave of you. Sometimes we just need that clean break and when I've done it in the past with no job to go to, it's always worked out for the best. Another job will be along soon.

Well done on taking the plunge Dazi
It is something I would dearly love to do as I am really unhappy and stressed in my job right now but just don't have the guts to do so without another job to go to.
    Good luck with the jobhuntning
  • they cant make you fill it in, if they have IIP its one of the good practice requirments that they conduct exit interviews-returns are notoriously low because even if people hate the company and want to vent they are always mindful of future refrence requests
my advice is to politley decline good luck in your new job x
even god cant change the past-no matter how many times i cry

Last time I had one, the HR manager filled it in as we went along (obviously wanted to make sure they got some return out of it:D ).

I had no particular gripe with the company and answered all the questions I wanted to - I didn't think it was any of their business how much I would be earning in my new job so I just told them that I was going to be paid more than I was on there - I think she knew better than to force the issue further.

As the others have sais, it's just for the company to get some feedback.

I refused to have my exit interview. I had been at the firm for 4 years and worked in the next office from Personnel but they allocated a contractor who worked one day a week to conduct the interview, and was somewhat offended that the people I knew were "too busy" to take the interview.

However they gave me the form and although I didn't answer all the questions, I did spell out for them why I was leaving and the pressure I was under and the fact the manager did not assist in any way when I was trying to learn a new job within the department, cover 3 people's jobs and train up someone else at the same time. The company motto was work smarter, not harder - so I told them that extending our daily working hours and expecting us to cover 3 jobs didn't quite fit into that category.

I gave it to head of personnel on the last day. Didn't get any questions at all.

Sometimes companies operate in this way - believing they may get a more honest answer to some of the questions if you are speaking to someone who is not so well known to you. (Obviously I don't know if that was relevant in your situation but if they got hold of the idea that your move was prompted by negative feelings about the company and a wish to leave rather than a positive wish to gain a better job, then maybe it was.)
