  • My condolences on your loss Phonix. I still cannot get my head around why we will put animals out of their misery but not people. We went through the same thing with my aunt.

You do seem to go onto autopilot when someone dies and you have to sort things out. Don't be surprised if it all comes up and takes you unawares later. This is perfectly normal. I always think things happen how they are meant to and you should not stress too much about not being there when your dad died. My dad had given me explicit instructions that he did not want what he called "the great death bed scene". He had witnessed a family go through this while in hospital and most particularly did not want my mum to go through it. As it turned out, he died in his sleep not long after visiting one night, and shortly after we had been made aware that things were going to happen sooner rather than later. My mum was initially upset that she had not been there but at least I was able to reassure her that that had been his wish. By going at the time he did, the issue was avoided because I have no doubt that if things went downhill when my mum was there or she was called to the hospital, I would not have been able to get her to go home even though it would have been what my dad wanted.
