Supermarket- pay rate

My local supermarket (one of the big four), is advertising for staff, in various departments. I was thinking of applying for a job with the night shift ( to fit in with school runs etc ), but need to know what rate of pay to expect to calculate whether it would be worth it, ( already a higher rate tax payer, child care costs etc. Does anyone have a rough idea, I know that they also give you 10% food discount that I would take into consideration. I am over 30

You already earn over £34,000 and you're also going to work nights in a supermarket? Really??0 -
Probably about £7.00-£8.00 an hour, if it is Tesco you get discount after a year, with Sainsbury's it's after three months.A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.
Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

34k dont mean they necessarily rich...0 -
here its £5.52! mostly employ kids on the £3 odd an hour though.
we are in the strange position of earning double what we did 4 yrs ago but needing an extra job, it happens. interest rates go up, so does food etc. (or in our case things come along! e.g full time nursery for 2 kids is about 14,500!!)
even if its £8 an hour you get about £4.80 an hour take home?0 -

Sorry, you're absolutely right but it just surprised me. I would've thought that someone who earned that much would have skills that could be used to earn more than supermarket rates, even for part time evening work.0 -

If you are paying 40% tax then you will proberbly be paying NI at or above the upper earnings limit every month. If this is the case then only 1% NI is due on the other job. A refund can be claimed or you can apply to defer payment.
