Training to be a midwife – what do I need?

I’ve decided that in a few years time I would like to re-train as a midwife, it’s not just something I’ve decided over night it’s been something I’ve been thinking about for 5 + years now and seriously looked into it about 2years ago but at the time it would have meant moving away and I wasn’t able to do that.
Any way, I’ve decided to go for it. Does anyone have any ideas what I need to do now? All of my qualifications are in things like business admin, customer services, etc. so I really will need to completely re-train.
Thanks for any help!

Hi Kitten
You first need to train as a general nurse which is now run via various colleges. Training is not salaried as it once was. I'm in Psychiatry so not well informed, which area are you in?0 -
Thanks Paul,
I'm in Gloucestershire. You wouldn't happen to know where is the best place to go for careers advise about... er, 'such careers'? I've put in searchs and there's just so many websites that come upA Life Less Simple - one day I'll get there0 -
You no longer need to train as a nurse first.
As far as i am aware, most universities prefer A Levels in a science subject. Although, if you are over 21 you may be able to do an access course first and then the degree after as a mature student. It might be worth sending an email to your local university that offers midwifery as a subject. Oh and i forgot to add that they may be looking for experience in social care. Here is the information for worcester university

you dont need a levals for all hospitals/unis,only the ones that do the degree course but some still do the diploma.its a three year course and you get a bursary whilst training.they do like some sort of health care experience even voluntary or caring for a relative or friend0
