Free online & offline virus checker - very good!

Well, after two days of nightmares with my computer, discovered that I must have had at least 3 trojan virus thingamybobs - two of which were detected by my normal virus checker, although it refused to do anything about them. Then discovered this free online virus checker:

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

Won't work on Firefox though - need Internet Explorer. This is excellent, it picked up several trojans and deleted them. :j

Edit: They also do a free version to download - not tried it yet, but the link is: http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-Free-Edition-v7.html#

Got and use the first two - I've seen Hijack This mentioned in a few other forums, but it seemed rather complicated, so I've avoided it - I'd assumed from what I had seen that it was more a diagnostic tool rather than a "search and repair" thing?

Don't forget to check out the Techie Board for loads of info about antiviruses, anti-trojans etc.

    Have a look at

Indeed it is, but it is very good if you take the log to one of many sites that diagnose it for you for free, telling you what to keep, what to remove etc

Oh and has anybody tried housecall here?

Only thing with virus scanners is they take sooo long, it will be 1 1/2 before its finished, and its lagging my pc

    Hi All,

While you are at it may I also suggest the following advice that I found, implemented and am now wetting myself with happiness.
    It works brilliantly.

This came from FurryGoat who got it from Sanjay's Coding Tips who found it at Darrell Norton's blog. It's a short list of things to do to speed up the launching of Adobe's Reader

It is all the plug-ins that are enabled by default slowing Acrobat reader down. After removing all but 3, it loads pretty much instantly.

    Here's how to do it:
Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader (replace the C if you installed on another drive, like I did).
Create a new folder called plug_ins_disabled.
Move all files from the plug_ins folder to the plug_ins_disabled folder except EWH32.api, printme.api, and search.api. There should only be these 3 files in the plug_ins folder.
    You're done.
    Enjoy.
