What computer & digital camera for beginner

Need your advice.

I must be the only person who doesn't own a computer or digital camera (my parents are more tech-advanced than me) so this Christmas I am going to treat myself however, I haven't got a clue on where to start with computer, printer, camera or software to get. Can anyone help please. Thanks in advance.

  • Wow! What a question - and how long will it take you to read through all the replies it is likely to generate??

Apart from saying "What do you want to use the PC for?" i am going to take the easy way out, and sugest that you visit the Computer Shopper Website and click on the 'Buying Advice' link on the left of the screen. They discuss, in pretty non-techie terms, what you should look for in (e.g.) a small office PC, a 'family' PC, a power gamer PC, etc, etc

If you scroll a bit further down on the site homepage, there is also a 'Focus on' article on Digital Cameras.

These will be a good starting point - but DO come back and ask some more questions after reading those two. :)
  • Thanks LincsLad, I will have a look.

The computer we are thinking about getting is for when I am on maternity leave, its so I can keep an eye on the outside world. My hubby wants to invest in a digital camera and to download and print the photos. So not knowing anything about computers, not really sure what sort of memory we need to look at amongst other things. Thanks for the advice, its appreciated.
  • To be honest, just about ANY current spec printer will do what you want - if you do not already have an Internet connection, that will be the most complex thing you will have to arrange.

If your other half wants to print out his digital photos, the printer will be as important as the PC and camera. Take a trip to PC World and note which printers give the best balance of price and performance for you, then price them up and buy on the web. ::)

Will not get to far into the PC except to say if you are going to get into Digital Photography; Camcorder; Music; Movies etc.

Do NOT skimp on the size of your hard drive (100Gb plus). Make sure it has USB 2.0 port and Firewire if you are going to use a camcorder. Also try and get an ethernet card fitted for best broadband performance.

Assuming you are not a gamer a fairly standard PC will do.

If you are going to use it for music a decent sound card might be worth it.

As far as the camera is concerned decide what you want SLR type the Fuji S602 from Fuji refurb site is a cracking buy.

Whilst Canon are doing some good refurb deals on ebay just now for refurb cameras.

Makes to look at that might not be top of your list include the Casio range and Panasonic (Leica Lenses).

If you want any ore info please PM me.

I am going through the digital revolution just now and my poor old PC is suffering under the load. But no money to upgrade just now....but I can certainly point out the pitfalls.
