The hostess trolley brings back memories, meritaten! was a must have in the 70's, but alas I never acquired one.
Mum used to keep a plate of food warm over a pan of hot water. Although I can't remember what it tasted like.0 -
Reminds me of the story OH tells about his nan..... if you ever went to her house for dinner you had best be there on time! She would plate up, then nuke in the microwave every ten minutes in case you walked in the door.... One night because of traffic he was 45 mins late for dinner, so not hugely late.... the dinner was completely inedible as it had been re heated for 5 minutes on full power three times in that 45 minutes! And it was massively overcooked to start with!! Bless.....sealed pot challange #572!Garden fund - £0!!:D£0/£10k0

lmao - I can top that!
my late FIL used to INSIST that his dinner was on the table the minute he walked in the door (never mind that he worked shifts and often did overtime, with no indication of what time he would come home)!
my late MIL used to cook dinner whenever she felt like it - then dish up and cover his plate and place in the oven on its lowest setting until he came in! I have known his dinner in the oven for six hours or more! she resisted getting a microwave on the grounds that she didnt think the food would be safe to eat! how FIL (and OH when he lived at home) never got food poisoning i dont know - but OH does have a cast iron stomach!0 -

my mum used to do this too! as i remember it the bottom of the food dried out while the top got all soggy from the steam!0 -
My mother used to keep food hot by putting the plate over a saucepan of simmering water and covering the plate with a saucepan lid.
My saucepan lids are flat so wouldn't work for this but Mum's were more rounded so covered the food without squashing it.0 -
I've added this to an existing thread on keeping food warm

There was always a plate of food covered with another plate on a saucepan of simmering water in my house when I was a kid. Dad worked shifts and if sat night fell on his 2pm -10pm shift sometimes I was allowed to light the gas and then turn it down when it got to boil. I would sit at his feet in the living room, the only time anyone ate in there with a tray, waiting in case I got one of his roast potatoes before I went to bed.0 -
Make dinner for 5 minutes after he gets home.If he ALWAYS gets home 15 minutes after dinner is ready - delay dinner by twenty minutes! either that or he dings it or it goes in the dog!
Not exactly helpful. I have a 3 year old and I already delay dinner as much as I can so we try and eat as a family, which I think is extremly important. Dh has a long commute home from work which makes judging the time he will be home very difficult. So putting it in a warm oven means he gets to eat a family meal when he walks in as often as possible. This is one thing that seems to be lost in a lot of families.
If I am cooking something that won't keep warm I cook his seperatly or I cook dinner for my son early and cook a main meal later which can be re-heated the next day for son or frozen. I can't cook twice every night!?
Thank you to everyone that gave me ideas of what I could use to cover the plate - I will try those ideas out. Thanks!SAHM Mummy tods (born Oct 2007) and dd (born June 2010)0
