Under the rehabilitation of offenders act a criminal record is deemed to be "spent" after 10 years for a prison sentance of 6 months or over, community service is deemed spent after 5 years.

However these can still appear on your CRB check if it is an enhanced disclosure. from the CRB website:

Once a conviction is ‘spent’, the convicted person does not have to reveal it or admit its existence in most circumstances. However, there are some exceptions relating to employment and these are listed in the Exceptions order to the ROA. The two main exceptions relate to working with children or working with the elderly or sick people. If a person wants to apply for a position that involves working with children or working with the elderly or sick people they are required to reveal all convictions, both spent and unspent.

All convictions remain on the Police National Computer (which the CRB check is run on) even after 10 years, and if you have three convictions for the same type of crime then they are disclosed.

    HTH for now.

And your potential employer should tell you if it is an enhanced or a standard check they are doing.

You might find it helpful to contact NACRO for advice on 'disclosing', ie how to tell people you've got a record without putting them off. It is better to disclose than to hope they won't find out, because it always looks worse if something comes back on the CRB and that's the first they've heard of it.
