Barclays, Bank Accounts & Landlords

Hello all...

Just a couple of questions...

I have an overdraft with Barclays so if I do go BR, I presume that this means that I will not be able to get a basic bank account with them?

I want to open an account before I go BR to insure that I can get my salary paid into the new account... (that's if I still have a job). As long as I tell the CoOp that I will be going BR and tell the OR that the CoOp is my new BR bank account, will this mean that it'd be ok for me to open the account before BR?

With regards to Landlords, will my landlord be told that I have gone BR. I've never been late with paying the rent but I'd hate for her to know in case she asks me to move out. If I go BR, will it effect the credit rating of the house I live in as this could be a reason as to why she'd not want me living here if it somehow blackmarked her address?

Thanks for your help...

  • Hi stresshead.

You may still be able to get a basic account with Barclays. I've known people on here that have managed it or been offered one even though Barclays was a creditor

You can open an account before going BR, but do as you said and tell them.
The account may still be frozen, but a quick call to the OR and its usually back to normal pretty quick

Regards the LL situation..its very much hit and miss i'm afraid. Some ORs do tell the LL but all you can do is ask and see. I begged mine not to and he didn't.

The address is not blacklisted by your BR, yet still many LL's prefer not to have BRs as tenants. If your LL does find out i'm sure he'd rather have a BR tenant already installed, whos always paid his rent, than have a place vacant for a time and the hassle of finding a new tenant and the risk that they might not be quite so good as you.

    Hope that helps a little.
The first time we said hello, was the first time we said goodbye. As the angels took your tiny hand and flew you to the sky-you forever left us breathless. RIP my beautiful granddaughter :(

    Hi stresshead,

I've heard of a few people on here who have been able to open a basic account with Barclays even though they've had debt with them, so all may not be lost there :)

Re opening an account with the co-op before BR - is there any particular reason you can't do it afterwards? Only because, from what I've read, this does seem to be more the recommended way of doing things; no worries about it being frozen or anything then.

Re your landlord - well, ORs seem to be a law unto themselves where this is concerned :( I have the same concerns as you, I really don't want my LL informed (we've only been in this house since Jan, I'd be devestated if we had to move again), so I'm going to plead (and beg if necessary) at my interview for her to not tell. You've got a good chance of them not telling if your rent is up top date and there's no BR clause in your tenancy.

    :)

  • Hi

I'm new to all of this too, and really worried about the LL. However I rang him and told him I was considering BR and what would his reaction be. He was fine, and said it would not be a problem. Realise I have been really lucky here, so maybe you will be too. Could a friend or relative offer to act as a guarantor? Not that I know much about it and most of my family go to ground nowadays when they see me coming in case I'm scrounging dinner again but worth a thought?
  • Thanks for everyones input, being on this board really helps keep things in perspective. My LL is really lovely but she's had a lot of problem tenants before me and I don't want to be an additional problem to her. I think when and if I do go BR, I'll speak to my OR and if they say that they will speak to the LL, I'll contact her myself and tell her myself as I think this is the best way to approach it.

I'm so glad that I have found others who understand what I'm going through as I was feeling so alone. Thanks again for everyones advice!
  • Hi Stresshead

I also wanted to open a Co-op cashminer account as soon as possible after going BR so could have minimum disruption to benefits being paid in and DD's going out.

However you are not supposed to open the account before going BR otherwise it will more than likely be frozen and then you would have to wait for the OR to contact the bank to say they have no interest in that account and get it unfrozen.

I called the Co-op and asked them, as it can take a few days/weeks for the account to be approved, if I could apply before going BR but arrange for the account to be opened afterwards. They said this was ok and asked me to include a covering letter. I went into my 'nearest' branch one week before my BR date and handed in completed forms with cover letter and presented the required ID. (For me, as I already had a co-op visa card and was on their system they didn't need the passport/utility bill ID I'd brought along).

After going BR last Wednesday I called their new business centre to see if my application had been processed yet. I got confirmation that it had been approved but had to wait for details of the account no./sort code. They rang me back today with the new account details, 3 working days after going BR:)

All the staff I spoke to were very helpful and fine with my BR status. If you want to apply over the phone you can contact their new business centre on: 08457 240752

    Good luck:)
