NHS pension question

Hi I was wondering if someone could help me.

I have worked for the NHS on a casual basis for the last 6 years, paying in to the pension. I have literally only worked a few shifts a year and so the amount I have paid is tiny. However I have not done any shifts for the last 18 months. I am still on the payroll as a casual member of staff however.
My question is, I am due to start permanent employment in a much higher paid job for the NHS in August. As I will be a doctor I plan to work for the NHS for life. Can I keep my current pension even if I have not paid in for the last 18 months? I want to keep on the old scheme and not have to join the new one that is due to start in April.
What will I have to do to make sure the contributions I make from August are linked to those I made previously?

Thanks.

  • you should be able to pay into your current pension- that's what I'm planning to do, been an auxiliary nurse and now at med school.

Get in touch with HR or pay role and ask them. Or when you start your FY contract in Aug make sure you leave the other job and get a staff transfer form thingy- I got one from NHS Grampian when I stopped bank nursing and it's got all the details of my pension, earnings, grade etc.

Ah thanks, that is my exact situation. Worked as an auxillary through sixth form and part of med school and qualify this summer.
When I start work I expect we will have some sort of talk on pensions so maybe they can give me a form then.

Write to the NHS Pensions Agency, provide them with your NI number and they will provide all the necessary information.
