Apple Crumble Question

I am going to make Apple Crumble for pudding for tomorrow night. I haven't made it in years, but roughly know what I am doing!

However, can anyone answer a couple of questions please:

a) I have some Gala apples in the fruit bowl needing used up - will they work just as well as cooking apples? Do I just need to use less sugar?

b) I have ordinary lightly salted butter, but recipes seem to say you should use unsalted butter. Will it make much difference?

Thanks for your help!

Ioften use any old apples that need using up, you will need less sugar with eating apples.

I don't usually use unsalted for something like crumble, save that for 'finer' baking! it won't make any difference I don't think.

I always use eating apples for my crumbles - like you say it's a good way of using up old ones. you won't need to add any sugar to the fruit but they will go mushier than a cooking apple will.

I wouldn't worry about which butter you use either. using salted butter won't make it taste salty

I always use whatever apples are available in the house so it's often eating apples and yes, I just cut down on the sugar. And I never have unslated butter so always use salted butter - and sometimes Clover if that's all that I have, and it's fine. Enjoy your crumble :D

    Thanks for all your replies.

I quickly made the crumble using the apples and salted butter. Instead of making the topping by hand, I decided to try out the food processor I got for Christmas which hadn't yet been used. I don't know if I "overwhizzed" (??) the mix or if I didn't add enough flour/sugar, but it went a bit lumpy!!!

I added lots more flour to dry it out and make it more crumbly. Hope it doesn't ruin it. Do you think that sounds ok?

    Thanks again!

The proof of the pudding is in the eating..

How was it?? Did the extra flour made any difference?

It looked ok, a but more lumpy than it should, but no longer massive lumps moulded to the shape of the food processing bowl like it was before! It's in the oven now, and I made a small one in a ramekin so I can test it. It smells nice anyway! I have the future In-Laws coming for dinner tomorrow so don't want to poison them.
