I've just been given a deep fat fryer (a Tefal Maxi Fry one), it's quite new from my neighbour who's BF has just moved in and has the identical one so they thought I'd like one.
Now, problem is that I don't have the manual and I've had a quick look on the Tefal website and got some tips. Thing is my neighbour says to put 'fresh' potato chips into cold oil for about 10 minutes or so, but the website says to make sure the pilot light is off and the required temp has been reached before putting food into it. What do you do, how long do I cook for? I'm using fresh potatoes for my chips tonight not frozen ones. Any guidance for my first go would be really appreciated

I don't know how much temp control you have, but this is what I do for crunchy chips from the potato.
wait till m/c at 175 deg. then add the potatoes and cook for 5 mins - remove. they will be soft, but still pale
raise temp to 190 deg. put chips back in, cook for 3 - 6 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy
drain on kitchen towel

I always wash and dry the chips first to remove the excess starch (even now when using actifry)
If you put them in before it's hot they'll go soggy from my experience.
Usually best to stick to the manufacturer instructions. One day I might be more organised...........

Put them into cold oil:eek:
The chips will soak all the oil up plus they will be soggy as already stated. Fatty & nasty.Tallyhoh! Stopped Smoking October 2000. Saved £29382.50 so far!0 -
as said wash and DRY the chips, then when the oil is up to temparature lower them gently into the oilI

Thanks so much for all your advice
I took your advice, peeled and cut the potatoes, washed and dryed them and stuck them in HOT oilfor about 8 minutes, totally yummy!
Very unhealthy but heyho, it's ok every couple of weeks and very cheap!!
Thanks againDFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
I always cook at around 150 degrees until cooked and crisp but not brown. Lift chips and whack the heat up to the hottest and finish off for a couple of minutes.
You can do the first step in advance and finish the chips off when ready.Start by doing what's necessary, then do what's possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible:j
