Ok, here's my gathering sticks story. One night in Mar 1998 in the dessert in Dubai (shameless name drop I know), me and some friends were on a dessert safari. This concluded in camping out in the middle of the dessert. Anyway they wanted 2 volunteers to go and gather the firewood for the fires. So me and my mate volunteered and off we went in the back of the truck.. Every so often we would stop, jump out and pick loads of firewood up and chuck it in the back of the truck. ANyway after a few stops, the driver (one of the guides; a local BTW) said that we shouldn't gather the wood like that. He told us that we should kick the wood first. Anyway he did (kick a pile of wood) and a bllody scorpion came running out. I jumped a mile. Anyway after that and at the remainder of the 'wood stops' me and my mate would kick the wood, jump back, then gingerly pick up the wood one bit at a time. You had to laugh
