Offered a job.... In Kampala!! (Uganda)

Having decided upon a career break (well, kinda forced on me), I've been submitting my CV to various recruitment companies.

Well today I got a scare - a company based in Kampala, Uganda would like me to go work for them.

So let's think about this for a minute, I'd get a company car (hope it's armoured), company house (I DO actually get a guard!!) and quite a good pay packet. But there is one problem - I couldn't go out by myself as I'd be dead within a week!

My answer - thanks, but really, no thanks!

    Perhaps you could commute... :rotfl:

Sorry, that wasn't helpful! How on earth did you get a job offer like that - I'd have thought it was quite specific?

I can see why you've said no!
  • I work in a very specialised field and have great experience working for some of the UK's largest companies.

I actually entertained the idea for all of about 5 minutes - Africa is an emerging market, but really, I like life too much!
  • Hey you ought to have thought about that a bit deeper asked for more details. My dad had a job out in Zambia on a two year contract and ended up staying for twenty years. Lifestyle is pretty good, if it was a serious offer you would have lived like a king!

Kampala is actually pretty safe. So long as you don't try anything stupid, the risk level would be a bit lower than in much of London.

Anyway, if you don't want it could you send me the details.

A friend of mine has been living in Kampala, on her own, for the past six years, and is still looking remarkably alive! And I've had a couple of holidays there too. Had a great time and never felt endangered, except when on the back of motorbike taxis.

Have you completely ruled it out?

You will never know until you ask - well demand. They might provide you with an armoured car, bullet/bomb proof car and house, 24hr armguard, Hiv/aids deflective shields, dark shaded spec to deflect all that poverty you might end up seeing whilst you're there.

You sound like you got the rights skills to do a perfect job for the people of Uganda and should be great work experience to add on your CV

One thing I can promise you if you decide to take the job and spend sometime in Kampala, is that, the experience will change your overview of Uganda. Or should I say Africa?

For a guy with such skilled sets - your "small minded thinking" disturbs me. I doubt if the queen would have visited Uganda and spent many days if that's how the rest of the developed world perceived Uganda or African for that matter. There are many British people living safely in Uganda and the rest of Africa. Please do me a favour and make up your own mind about Africa in general than the negative stuff you see or read on the media

DS2 tried to get on a Scout trip to Uganda for this August - he wasn't successful but the pre-selection blurb said it was one of the safest places in Africa to go to.

The type of work I do would put me at the forefront of the problems in Uganda with very little support - having visited Africa many times (Tanzania, Kenya, Congo etc) and been involved with many disturbances out there, I should've explained, it's perhaps time for me to aim for a quieter life.

Apologies for the rant Devils - guess I jumped the gun there without knowing the true facts

It's just gets to me when people use a single African country they probably only seen on TV, never visited and generalise it to the whole of African.

But you my friend are as African as they come - once again sorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyy:beer:
  • Kampala is probably safe than some parts of London.
