Single PC wireless broadband access

Hi all -

Have been looking for an answer to this question and anything I see is geared towards more than 1 PC....
Apologies if I have missed it!

How do I best go about getting wireless connectivity for my single PC?

I have a wireless - G PCI adapter installed in the PC and bought a wireless - G access point. I thought I would just need an ethernet modem (currently USB) to connect to the access point and it would connect wirelessly with the PCI adapter, saving me running cable through the house.

Went to buy an ethernet modem in PC world. Guy there says my setup won't work - access points are for wireless networks to connect to existing wired networks. He left me totally confused and was talking routers needed etc.....

Can anyone help? would greatly appreciate it ???

a wireless adsl/modem router would be your best bet to satisfy all the criteria. Not sure of the technical ins and outs but I beleive the PC world bloke is right, the router is needed to sort out the traffic etc.

Given your current equipment you need to buy a DSL modem and wireless router to sit between the telephone socket and the access point. Ideally the router should have a firewall.

As Woby_Tide said, the best and easiest solution is to use an integrated ADSL modem/wireless router/firewall instead of your access point and USB modem. Several makes are available: Netgear, Belkin, Linksys, 3Com etc.

I have just done this very thing today in fact.
Using a Belkin ADSL modem/router and a Belkin Wireless G USB network adapter.

Modem router plugge in to phone line via an ADSL filter and USB adapter plugged in to the , U guessed it, USB slot.

All up and running fine. Very easy to sep up and expandable.

I'm just about to plug the 2nd PC upstairs into it all now.

The Belkin Modem/router was about £70 or £80 from simply computers, next day delivery (although it said up to 3 days.)
