Slightly off topic, but are their any Geordies that remember sheppards money?
Wasn't he the bloke that used to run Newcastle United?0 -
Obviously no-one has bought a postal order for ages - you can no longer stick stamps on them. They are printed to the exact amount you require.0

Don't know never been interested in football.
The Sheppards I was referring to was a department store in Gateshead. It had it's own money, plastic stuff that looked like the old pre-decimal money except it has a flat edge.
When ever you bought something in Sheppards you got your change in Sheppards money, so you had to go back their to spend it.
I think it closed down in the late 70's early 80's, but it was a famous store for decades. I was born in 59 and when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's everyone had sheppards money in their pockets. When ever you asked anyone how much money they had on them they would always say something like "£2.56 plus 46p in sheppards money" It was a catch phrase in those days.0 -

Not in every post office. I sold a book, through a regional ads paper about three weeks ago and someone in Devon sent me a PO with stamps on it.
The post office in our town prints labels instead of giving you stamps, so I guess it would also print POs. But we also have a post office in the local Spar shop and it doesn't have any kind of printer. Well, the till prints a receipt, but that's it.0 -
The old style PO's with or without stamps have to be redeemed at a Post Office.
Banks only accept the new version which for all intentions is a cheque.0 -

No they didn't.
Until you were 12 they used to say " £2.11s.2d plus 9s.2d in Sheppards money". In fact, in Gateshead, they probably said that until you were at least 15!:p Decimalisation was more reluctantly accepted the further North of Watford one progressed! If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Is that the brewery that makes some sort of brown ale?;) You're not confusing him (Shepherd) with the Vicar that used to play cricket for England? And why, whilst still on postage stamps, have you changed your username;)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Just a thought for people like me who (begrudgingly), has been forced to pay someone £5.00 per week.
Postage stamps will be bought back at any Post Office at face value providing they are unused and undamaged and they are submitted with a Post Office form (P674).
This of course is ideal for someone who doesn’t have a bank account and wants proof of payment as the Post Office will have to provide evidence that the stamps have been turned into cash.
I am waiting for the Royal Mail to come back to me regarding “stamps as legal tender”.
Just a thought.0 -
I remember getting refunds for stuff (like washing powder that was rubbish) in stamps, and not that long ago either, I think it was/is an easy way for companies to send small amounts of "money" (say less than £5) in the post.
In fact now I think about it the most recent time I've had this was from Westminster Council about 2 years ago when I complained about all the parking meters in a particular street that were just eating money and not giving any tickets (I complained out of principle, because so many machines in the same road were faulty, rather than caring about the actual money) - think that was about £3.50 that they sent to me in the form of stamps.0
