Details missing after burglary

Hello all - hope this is the right place, just after a bit of advice

A friend of mine recently had her purse stolen in the street by a fairly notorious local dropout who's just out of prison, and as a result has been burgled - along with various valuables they took her bank details, gas bill and her husband's payslips.

I'm concerned that these may get used for fraudulent purposes (she's passed them off as just bits of paper - but I reckon nobody would steal these without reason) so I want to help her limit the damage. I think I've read that Experian etc can put a note on your account so they contact you if anyone applies for credit in your name - is that correct? What's the best way of ensuring that any attempt to use her details is refused?
