Dishwasher tablets vs powder+salt+rinse aid

Has anyone actually worked out how much, if anything, is saved by using separate powder, salt, rinse aid, rather than the combined tablets (when bought on offer, of course!)? The tablets seem to be forever on special offer, whereas the separate things never are.

Is the water hard or soft in your area?
We have soft water here, so I don't need salt. We have a slimline dishwasher, so I use half a tablet, and I use vinegar as a rinse aid...:DThe IVF worked;DS born 2006.0 -
Oh, hard water here, and a full size dishwasher, which I generally cram with as much as possible!0

Well, the salt is dirt cheap and powder lasts for ages. I use these two and never use rinse aid, and everything comes out lovely. I think tablets are just a marketing ploy to squeeze as much money out of us as possible.:rotfl:
After all, people got by just fine with powder and salt in the past. I can't see any reason why they shouldn't now. Try doing a search on the Old Style Moneysaving board. I'm sure this has been discussed there.0 -
Forgive me if this is a daft question but where do you put the powder? My d/w has a tablet shaped compartment inside the door. Where would the rinse aid go?
