dvd player wont play dvd's

I have a centurian portable dvd player that has stopped playing DVD format disks. It will play CD and VCD.
Any ideas what has happened

    possibly some dust on the laser, my daughter has a top loading dvd and if it gets a speck of dust on the laser it will not work,cleaning disks are available.

    Thanks. I'll give it a go although it is only 10 days old so am a bit worried
