how does my German girlfriend work in the uk?

Hi All

myself(English) and my girlfriend(German citizen) are currently considering moving from Spain to the UK to live, long story.
Anyway, what papers/permits would she need to work/live in the UK? and how would she apply for these essentials. Or do we have to get hitched?!:o

thanks
Jon

None. She is an EU national, like the Irish, Polish, French, Spanish etc
  • does she need a National Insurance number?

    4. How do I apply for a National Insurance Number?
If you are working or have just found a job in the UK you must also apply, in person, for a National Insurance Number in order to register for social security. You can apply for one at your local Benefits Agency Office (details in local telephone directory). You will need proof of identity.

Proof of identity for an EU Citizen is a passport.
  • thanks Connor! :T
will get a form sorted for her to fill in!

    Hi Jay Cee

You can actually commence work without having a permanent NI number – you'll be issued with a temporary one. You can legally work under this but deductions from your salary will be higher than usual. You should apply for a proper one as soon as possible.

Having moved over here from Ireland, I did this 5 years ago. I was given a date for an "interview" (basically some form-filling and a few questions) and was issued with the number a couple of weeks later.

    Hope this helps.

"Proof of identity for an EU Citizen is a passport."

    or their identity card.

After all, they may not have a passport.
  • Make sure she keeps ALL payslips, there seems to be a lot of incidence of non-uk citizen who get national insurance numbers being given a duplicate number of somebody who is a uk citizen, there was a bit on Watchdog about it a few weeks ago and this has just happened to a friend of mine after being here for about 4 years and it's only come to light now she and BF have had a baby and are filling in all the child tax credit forms etc.
