Hi,
I have a situation where I don't know what to do.
I have an 8 month old son so I work on a part time 3 day a week basis in finance. My current job has a number of issues with it which makes it phyiscally draining for me, there is a lot of traveling included in my job but I don't drive so all on public transport.
Well I was offered a new job same salary point but 2.5 days a week. So I would lose approx £150 a month after tax. So we would struggle as a family.
During my maternity leave I restricted my spending heavily and managed to pay off £2000 worth of debt. I now just have a loan at £185 a month until August 2010. I have been trying to save money up to make additional payments.
If I took the new job that would stop and I am worrying that I will end up in my overdraft and using my credit card again.
However the extra half day a week with my son would be wonderful but wouldn't save any money as the half day would be on the day he goes to the in laws
Added to the problem I have verbally agreed to the new job, can I even change my mind now? Also my current manager knows I have been offered the job and has said pretty much that she wants me gone  , I got pregnant very quickly after starting the job and she hasn't forgiven me!!
Any advice would be gratefully received

Hi,
Do you claim tax credits? if you will be earning less they should increase slightly. will the travelling be less so you can save on travel costs?
I know its hard when you are trying to control debts and raise a family ( I have 4 children) but in your shoes I think I would take the new job and have a fresh start. Go through your income and expenditure and see where cutbacks can be made to allow you this extra time with your child.
This is only my opinion though, hope it helps0 -
Is there any flexibility about the days you would work or the days that your son goes to the in-laws, so he could be with them on one of the full days and in nursery on the half day? It might be worth asking.0

Would it be possible to say to the New Job that your old job have offered you a slight pay rise and askingif you could increase your salary on the pay scale so that you do 2.5 days but get paid for 3?.:j
No sure whether this is even an option but it may perhaps be worth calling there bluff as by the sounds of it you would really prefer the new job with extra time with your son and away from old boss but are worried about your finances.
Even if they say no, you have done a fantastic job paying off what you have already could surveys, ebay etc maybe help generate a little extra income, no doubt you have probably tried all these already but I know how fast my little one outgrew toys & clothes.
Will be keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out for you.0 -
Unfortunately there isn't any way they could increase the pay, they have agreed that I can start on the same salary as I would have had in April with my increment.
I am reluctant to reduce my hours with the childminder as he is only there for the 2 days, he loves it and also I need him to be at a childminders in that area as it is used towards the school he goes too. My home address is in a different catchment area and the school is rubbish!!!
I get my bus fare paid for travelling between sites, however I get nothing for the additional hours I put in. I take my lunch hour while travelling, where as the others who drive take it seperately. I have always tried to be fair with work about that as I know there is a big difference.
Matters are complicated by my OH who at first seemed to be positive about the change but I think he is now starting to realise the struggle we would have. Espically as we had lots of plans this year for finishing the house off but now would not be able to afford to.
Tax credits are a waste of times for us, even when my salary went down from 18.5k to 11.5k part time hrs my tax credit didn't change!!! So dropping by another 1k I don't think would make a difference.
There isn't much I could save money on. the main one is sky but it breaks my heart to take it away from my oh as he enjoys it.0 -
Face it---you are going to have to take the new job if your current boss wants you gone.
Why dont you take it & cut back, you did it before. There could be a chance you could increase your hours after you have started. Try & persuade the in laws to have baby another day so you can spend more time with her.
As for tax credits, it may be that you dont get any working tax credit at all, just the child bit. Check it out on the calculator, theres one on her & one on the main tax credit site.
Why dont you post your SOA on here, I am sure there is cut backs to be had.Tallyhoh! Stopped Smoking October 2000. Saved £29382.50 so far!0
