Please help advise me looking for jobs in a non local area.

Good Morning Everyone :D

Recently i left uni and i done a standard it job for a year and then moved home from England to Scotland... It was the worst idea i have ever had because the oppertunities compared to down south are bleak :(

I have been fored for the last couple of month to work for a popular bank with terrible working conditions and very low pay (ie, to get to work takes me 2 hours work to pay for the ticket).

Without selling myself short, i do have skills in a particular field of IT and have been replied to by several places, London, Birmingham, Leeds...

However i have some problems and id really love if someone could give me advice.

Im used to bad temp jobs and my experience is of poor pay, unskilled roles, an agency will insist a job is there for me, ill take the day off work, go and sign up and then thats it.... no outcome... no position.. and i lost a days pay. Its constantly the same.

The roles i have applied for are well paid, much beyond what i need to live off and i have showed examples of work and got a decent response to it so i know i have the technical ability but....

Working for 30 quid a hour is a far cry from working the last 10 years at 7 quid a hour tops. Like... A whole new world and culture that i am just not used to.

Id happily take a pay decrease as i enjoy working with the technology anyway and i really am not one for possesions, maybe in a few years time i can be much more confident but now i just feel out of my depth.

The man in leeds wants me down there for an interview but this is a nightmare. To get to leeds and back even on a bus is a significant portion of a weekly pay when i have commitments such as rent and bills plus even if i managed to scrape together enough to make the interview... its with an agency so am i just wasting my time like here? Id be mega annoyed to go to Leeds in return to be poor just so a recruitment can boast "x registered candidates".... do you know what i mean?

Further more, there is relocation. Provided i get the job 2moro just pretend, do they expect me to just turn up for work on Monday after finding a place in Leeds, paying a months rent and deposit upfront, then living for a month.... In my current job (which is quite literally all i can do as i try daily (and desperatly) to seek new work) it would take about a year and a half of constant saving....

So do i have any options? When your wage goes up significantly, do you get a bit more respect in terms of options? I mean, is it cheeky to ask an employer to help with interview costs or relocation costs seeing as id be moving the best part of 300 miles?

I am lost here like i say, i dont know who to ask, my family and friends are like me, work in banks and warehouses and factories. My sister is successful but with salons, and the rest of my family is general trades so i am stuck with infinite low confidence because i cannot approach anyone for advice... its been this way for 2 years with me.

I did try to ask for advice at the job centre and went to the appointment but it was pretty nonsical, "well mr grandpaw, you have no experience so we should find you a general IT job such as technical support advisor and after x years, move to more specialised ground"..... The whole point is, companies are interested in the work i produce so she was no help although she meant well.

Im sorry to drag on... I just dont know where to go and am slowly starting to just accept a poor life, always counting pennies and enjoy what i have as opposed to living in a world dominated by keeping on the bleeding age of technology just to keep my options open for a job that i will never get at this rate.

Thanks for having the patience to read this and for your time.

Kind regards,

Grandpaw.

  • Hi ya!
What an annoying position you are in.

This Leeds agency- do they have one that is nearer to you by any chance? You could perhaps ask to be interviewed somewhere closer to home?

Not sure if there is anything, but would jobcentre be able to help out in anyway? Thing is though once you have a job they don't really have anything to help you with. Still worth a try.

Fraid that's all I can think up at the mo.

Perhaps try looking for jobs that are related to agencies that can interview you were you are. Just explain the money situ and let your enthusiasm come across at the same time. Even ask the agencies about the moving to a different area bit and see if they can advise.

    Good luck!
