Make your life easy by going for a decent brand: Linksys, D-Link, Belkin, Netgear are all good, reliable products and you'll find set up and support much less hassle.

Save a few quid by keeping to the slower 11mbps rate UNLESS you're swapping large files across the network all the time. However, for not much more you can get faster, but consider that even 11mbps is faster than broadband and so why waste cash on speeds you'll never achieve. All depends on how much you want to save and that depends on what offers you find for specific products.

If you need VPN connection to your workplace, make sure the Router supports it. Some don't.

Ebay is good sometimes for just discontinued Routers, though don't assume the prices there will beat offers found via the sites I mentioned above. Post charge is often a deal-breaker!

Personally, I have experience of both linksys and D-Link and would happily recommend both. It's much less hassle going for an all in one solution ... and though I currently have cards from 3 different companies running on our PC and laptop based network, I would buy same brand in an ideal world.

Next, do a search on Kelkoo, Dealtime and Pricerunner to see what the best price is for the model you want, including delivery! Personally, I would go for one that works with wireless too unless you have a wired network already in place. Even then, extra cost is a worthwhile investment for most people long term. Again, makes life easy, but make sure you use security when setting up.

No recommendation as to model. You need to know exactly what facilities you want and then shortlist those that meet your needs. Then focus on best all in price.

I fitted a Linksys WAG54G for someone about a month ago and it was A1.
You can get them pretty cheap on ebay too.

I did a lot of research recently when I was looking for a Modem/Router. I specifically wanted one with a USB port and I wasn't too fussed about an ethernet switch as I wanted everything to be wireless anyway. I ended up buying an Actiontec ADSL Wireless DSL Gateway (modem/1 port router) for £65.82 including VAT and next day delivery. It was a doddle to set up and has been working flawlessly in my "mongrel" wireless network which connects five different manufacturers wireless products. If it can cope with that, I reckon it must be ok. Details: http://www.retailonline.ltd.uk/StoreCart/main.asp?ID=8&Product=308

I too have had an Actiontec wireless modem/router. At first it was fine and then the firmware started playing up entailing several support calls to India and USA.

After sorting me once I then got fairly poor service, and the problem kept returning after a few days. Then I started getting lots of referals to other people, promised call backs that never came, etc. Eventually I returned it to Dabs for a full refund.

As I said, when working it was fine. Once it went bonkers, life became a real pain! They are cheap and you may be lucky. Personally, I wouldn't recommend based on my own experience with their 'support' line.

I'd agree with Loafer and go for a Linksys. Easy to install and reliable in my experience of at least 3-4. I have a D-Link and 110% happy to buy another if I ever needed to.

Ebay one has gone now but below is a link to one for 72.99 inc vat (free del till end of Oct)

    simply.co.uk

The ebay one actually went for 80 including delivery so this one is cheaper.

I'm after one as well but the budget says I'll have to wait a bit - need an iron first :(

I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't need tech support then. I didn't have a lot of options as I needed USB and not many modem/routers have that capability. Anyway, it's working fine so I'll hope it stays that way.

  • I have had no complaints about my Netgear DG 834
  • Belkin is belting! I bought a Belkin wireless router and benefited from the best free lifelong technical support. Yes, it's free and there forever..................
