AOL keeps reconnecting

Hi all
I am making enquiries on behalf of my friend who is, like me, on AOL broadband.
He has the same modem as me, BT Voyager 105 and has intermittent problems with having the modem keeping to re-connect quite often. I do have the occassional problem as such but assume that's par for the course these days. He came round last night and tried his modem on my PC and it worked fine without any problems he was experiencing.
He did contact AOL and mentioned the problem and was advised to ring BT to have his line checked out. Not a problem but BT said that if the line was ok then he would be charged £60 for the privilidge so he said that it was AOL that advised him to check it out.
So, does any one out there have any ideas as to what is the best way to solve this re-connecting problems please? is it the AOL software that would need re-installing (he's done that already), the operating system (XP)?
One thing he did notice is that the message came up on the task bar saying that "Local Area Connection-a network cable is unplugged). What does that mean and does it have any bearing on the problem, if so how could it be rectified?
Many thanks for looking into this whoever decides to solve it!
Keith

Do you have filters on every phone line ? If not then this is the likely cause.
If you do, then the chances are that the problem is caused by something in your phone extensions (often sky boxes seem to cause this).
First get BT to do a line test they may hear noise at your end of the line pointing to a faulty device or faulty wiring.
Next try to unplug every phone extension and device (answerphone/fax/sky box etc) in the house and see if you have a problem. If no problem then try plugging each device back in in turn and testing to find out which device is causing the problem. If this does not resolve the problem, the chance is that it is a problem with your internal phone wiring (I had this problem)
To determine this, plug the adsl modem into the master socket where it comes into the house (unscrew the front panel and you will find the master socket inside) If it all works fine then you have a problem in the wiring.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Re - "Local Area Connection-a network cable is unplugged"
is connecting his PC and modem by USB or LAN ( network card/ cable)- I think BT Voyager 105 is just USB but not sure
if its USB then can't see that the above error mseeage is an issue

If his line is at fault- but still OK for voice my understanding is that he must report to his ISP (AOL) who will get BT to check itAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
I have exactly the same problem with my aol connection bt 105 modem i have tried everything to get it to connect correctly including reinstalling the software, i am now going to try going down the hardware route and install another modem.
On the modem there should be 3 lights power, data and DSL when the pc is turned on the power light should come on, the data light should flash a few times then stay on and when you connect to the internet the DSL light should also remain on.
In the bottom right there are two dark green arrows that should flash when you are connected to indicat that you are sending and recieving data correctly.
In my case the upsteam of data is fine but i am not getting anything back which affects connection and therefore boots me of the internet.
As for BT charging for a line test i suggest that you contact AOL tech line - they will go through troubleshooting which won't work! then you will be passed on to the 2nd line support who will pass the details onto BT for a line test, they didn't say i would get chaged catch 22 though cos they have not contacted me to say that the line is ok either!
I will be continuing my troubleshooting this week and let you know how i get on and if i can help any further.
AOL sometimes it's like AOHell!!
The LAN connection indicates either the cable that go's into your phone line is unplugged or may well be faulty, if you need another one it is called an RJ11 cable.
The only other thing i can thinnk of in this case is to try repairing the connectivity.
Go to control pannel - highlight "AOL CONNECTIVITY SERVICE" - click add/remove - select to repair - reboot.
It does help getting the connectivity back but as you can see from my issue it may only work for a short time.
let me know how you get on.0 -
I had this problem since the last upgrade. I eventually managed to get through to Tech Help and was sent a 4 page email with instructions about what to do to overcome this problem. So far I have had no dropouts since following these instructions. I can forward the email if anyone would like to see it.0
