Barclaycard being naughty?

Hi guys,

I posted this on the credit card charges forum but didn't really get a response so thought I would try you kind souls to see if you could help.

Thanks

Can anyone tell me if banks have to keep details of your account, i.e. be able to produce statements, for a certain amount of time by law?

My husband recently requested details of 2 credit cards he held with Barclaycard to see if he had any changes he could claim back and they have written back to say that they cant trace his account. He provided them with full name, current and previous addresses, date of birth and date both accounts were opened and closed (although he doesnt have account numbers). Can they really wriggle out of it by saying they cant locate his account details?

Thanks in advance!

  • Credit Card companies do have to retain records for a minimum of 3 -6 years and longer in some cases. However, without an account number they are unlikely to provide any information due to their fraud prevention policy.

  • Thanks for that. Do you think that they would be obliged to provide details if he went in with proof of ID?

Write to them again, enclose a photocopy of your passport.

While what BlackCat says is essentially correct, providing you can prove who you are, they have to supply the information.
