Amber Select and Car Insurance

Hi folks new to the board and need some advice.
I purchased a new car in jan 2006 and took out insurance with an insurance comapny called sureterm direct, paid the deposit and what not, signed the paperwork for the direct debit etc. later that month my wife had her employment terminated as she was off work sick as suffered a stroke as a result of equipment in the work place and we had failed to maintain the repayments on the car so in july they took the car back (was on HP). i called sureterm the same day to canx the insurance and they told me they will do so that day but to send back the ins cert which was done the same day.
i had paid my premium in june (26th) and was told that will be due a refund but not to cancel my direct debit as the refund will come in this format so i left it running in july anther pmt was taken out and the same in august at that point i cancelled the mandate.
I then recieved a letter from a comapny called amber select adv that i owe an installment, i called them to adv that the insurance was cancelled they had no record of it but this was of no concern as i was paying for a loan which wthe funds were paid to sureterm for my premium and i owed this money. I spoke with sureterm and they adv that the insurance was not cancelled as they had not rec the ins certificate i advised then that it was sent they then sent me a form to say that it was lost in the post and at which point the insurance was cancelled.
Then i get a letter from amber select adv that i owe 280 ish on the loan i disputed this straight away and adv them that they owe me money as i had paid for something that i was not using for 2 months. They have been sending me letters in relation to this threatening to send peaople out to my house to discuss this even gave me a date and time but no one turned up - then i recieved a county court form re the debt now in excess of £330.00 i put in my defence online which was acknowledged and now i am waiting to hear from amber selects solicitor.
sorry for the long windedness of the post but could do with some help/advise regarding this
many thanks
