Hola folks,
My wife and I moved into a new build three years ago ... thing was, the move ate all our dosh, so we've had a bit of a shell home for the past few years. We're trying to do a few bits though, and wanted to put in a fireplace, nothing fancy like, just so that the smoke goes up the chimney and not into the room!!! Basically we've just the cut away section that leads to the chimney ... nothing in it.
I wandered to a fireplace showroom today and nearly keeled over ... cheapest was about 400 quid ... is that normal? I'm not looking a huge mantel or anything like that ... I can make it myself over time, I just want the actual heart bit ... any ideas or advice on good places to go?
Anyone have a ballpark figure for a DIRT CHEAP fireplace too ... is £400 what I'll have to shell out??
Cheers for any help!

Hi Willspireite
I saw your post earlier and thought I'd add to what Cathy had said...
Ebay is a good place to go... Many people who have new fireplaces installed, sell their old ones there. They tend to be in good condition and although, maybe a little old fashioned, you will normally only pay between £20 and £100... Quite a deal.
:exclamati Now is a great time to be phoning around your local fireplace shops. They are often happy to part with ex display models at a discounted rate, especially now, as most showrooms are currently making show space room, for the latest designs.
:exclamati Another great idea, is to phone around all of the internet fireplace sellers and the retail outlets for any seconds, or slightly damaged fireplaces, i.e. a scratch or a dent and not something that would make it unsafe for use.
Any more info, please send me a message and I will be glad to help.
Incidentally, if you are interested... I recently put an article up on this forum, regarding; Caring for Limestone Fireplaces. If you happen to get a good deal on one and want some advice, check this post out. There have been a few people post to it and it's got some useful points there...

I thoroughly recommend Abbey Fires on the Shore Road, Belfast. Very friendly and helpful and good prices too.
If you give them a ring with measurements and tell them what you need they'll give you an idea of the price over the phone. How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0
