actimel

i was blinded by an offer in the supermarket for actimel drinks and decided to buy them and give it the 2 week challenge.

I started on Monday so have only had 2 so far but i've had terrible stomach cramps, bloating and wind since Monday. Nothin else in my diet has changed.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal? Not sure whether to give up and count my losses or hope that it's just getting worse before it gets better

  • I tried them and gave up after a week. Bloated and windy. Caused more problems than they solved

There is plenty of research like the above that shows probiotics can help strengthen the immune system.

Particularly after using antibiotics I think using probiotics would be a good idea.

Iherb would probably be the cheapest source of the Garden of Life product recommended at the above link.

But there is nothing to stop you making your own home made yoghurt/kefir and adding actimel or whatever else to the culture.

  • hi

my son was a fussy eater so we decided to help him get the usual extra vitimans etc... from pro-biotic drinks.

starting with actimel and then various others including munch bunch kids & flora pro- biotic.

we had the smae problem with actimel and within a week of going on munch bunch he started getting headaches and dry skin.

we took him to the docs and now he has eczema, which as we have no family history and the only change in his diet was the 'healthy drinks' leads us to believe they are not so healthy as they make out.

i suggest take vitamin tablets instead as they are cheaper and you know what your getting.

some of these products which are being sold to the general public as healthy are not what they seem.

read your ingredients and do a search on aspartame, i assure you that the touch them again.

you dont get this problem in good old fashion vitamin tablets

I have IBS. When I have a bad flare up, I take Actimel for 2-3 weeks and it helps settle my bowel back down again.
Here I go again on my own....

Meanwhile, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS trust is conducting preliminary research to see whether probiotic yoghurts could help reduce the risk of patients developing superbugs.Free pots of Actimel, which contains "friendly" bacteria, are being handed out to elderly patients on antibiotics who are at a higher risk of contracting superbugs.
"We are providing Actimel probiotic yoghurt to patients on the wards where we have previously had more cases of C difficile," the trust's medical director, Matthew Fletcher, said.
"There is some evidence to suggest that using these probiotics may reduce a patient's risk of C diff, and we will be evaluating the difference this has made to the number of cases."
A spokeswoman for the trust said the initiative was "not a trial, but a preliminary pilot project in patients at greatest risk of C difficile infection".

"It has been running for three months and the information for this period is currently being analysed with the intention for running for a further three months," the spokesman added.

"If the data looks encouraging at this point, we intend to set up a larger, randomised study."
The superbug expert Mark Enright, of Imperial College, in London, cast doubt on the likely effectiveness of probiotics in tackling hospital infections.
"The evidence that these probiotics do any good is a bit slight," he added. "But there's also little evidence that it will be harmful."
It's certainly too early to say that actimel helps prevent hospital acquired infections.

I'm sure you don't need me to remind you that correcting the current deficiency status of your natural anti-biotic vitamin would seem to be the obvious first step.

As you know the giving of anything that appears to be medical advice, even it is merely common sense, is frowned upon in this forum.

It is a historical fact the human body spend over 2 million years evolving mainly outdoors and a scientific fact the human body reaches a natural vitamin d homeostasis between 100nmol/l and 150nmol/l but posts that draw attention to these facts are soon deleted.

Those who have a vested interest in maintaining and further increasing the rates of chronic conditions of western civilisation will soon hit the "abuse" button even though preventing illness is far more moneysaving than treating it's symptoms. But it takes a certain amount of common sense to understand that idea.

Hormonally active vitamin D(3)-1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (1,25D3)-acts as a signaling molecule in cutaneous immunity by increasing pattern recognition through Toll-like receptor-2 (TLR2), and increasing the expression and function of antimicrobial peptides.

Now who would want to improve cutaneous immunity by increasing the expression of antimicrobial peptides?

I suspect those moneysaving experts who do, will want to spend 20minutes exposing as much cutaneous tissue as possible to the midday sunshine.;)

  • i stopped drinking them and i'm back to normal now (tho it took 3 days for the pain and bloating to go!)

seems such a shame to bin them but i wouldn't wish that on anybody so i'm not going to donate them to somebody.
