I can recommend the Philips DVP5960, although I got it on offer for around £25, the cheapest I can see today is around £41, but I suppose you might find some discount vouchers (and Quidco of course).

Region free by a code readily available on internet.

Edit - just seen it on Amazon after reading CB1979 post, and you can buy it and an HDMi cable for £41.28 delivered, that's quite a good deal methinks.
I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove a thing! ;)
    Quidco and Topcashback, £4,569

    Tesco Double The Difference, £2,700

Don't buy this! Mine broke after 6 months, so did my colleagues (bought on the same day). Whilst they might be great while they work.. they're not very durable. The remote control is also rather naff and hard to use.

I've just replaced it with a Phillips DVD player that upscales and cost 39.99 from Currys (it also has DivX and USB in). It's very good and i think the upscaling quality is a little higher than the model from Maplins

  • I also bought the Phillips DVP 5980 from Amazon (like CB1979) and can say it is an excellent player, the USB port at the front is great for playing AVI files off a memory stick. Bought my Mum one for her Birthday I was so impressed

Watched Lord of the Rings the other night on our HDMI television (viewsonic) and was blown away at the picture, definetely recommend it

Yes the Philips 5980 is great I have two the 5980 and 5990 both play from usb pen drives
  • The no-name brands aren't cheaper than the other more expensive ones eg Philips Sony Toshiba// as many people have stated here, they are badly designed and very fragile. I peviously had a n0-name and thought it was a bargain but the playback was inferior and it stopped workinhg fully, very quickly. 1x good one versus 3x mediocre ones? and you wont be happy with the cheap ones unless you suffer defective vision.

  • As many threads confuse / argue which are the better upscaling dvd / divx dvd players, the makes do not actually matter at all.

What does matter, is the divx chipset !!

There are many different chip sets including mediatek, ess vibrato, sigma, zoran vaddis etc... Just about all chipsets have there issues, and dont play or correctly dont play gmc/qpel/packed bit rate and varied types of divx/xvid.

The one chipset that does stick out above all the rest is zoran vaddis, and has very little issues at all, and plays just about all varied types of divx/xvid. The only types it doesnt play are the x264 / similar type formats.

This chip set has been in the tevion, and lg dvd players as of this last year.

When choosing a dvd player particulary for divx / xvid support then the chipset is what should decide, not the make / model.

Most would argue its just as easier to have media player / centre for the xbox, or even the divx player on the ps3 which even play the x264 formats as well, although the ps3 has to be fooled into playing them.
  • Hi

I have an old DVD player that plays Divx files and about to purchase one for my sister and a friend so that they can watch some of my files themselves.

My player is now discontinued so I'm looking for budget alternatives, say up to £40.

Many of the ones covered above and in other threads here are now no longer available (at least with the original stated price) what do our DVD savvy forum think of the following?

    Thanks

    B
Sigmatek - XS-700 Pro DVD Player, £29 Pixmania

Philips DVP3260/05 - DVD Player with USB, £39.10 Amazon

Are people on here aware that you can now play DIVX/XVID on your Xbox360 now if you have downloaded the new Xbox dashboard?

Just pop them on a memory stick and plug it in the USB then go to Video and select USB storage and there you go!

I've watched a good few films on mine lately and they look good, not sure if they upscale or not, the Xbox puts out a 1080p picture and all the films I've watched look fine.
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)
