One point of displaying my situation here is so others can form some opinion on whether, or how, to invest in the solar gambit.

If you give us some data perhaps "others" can get an idea if it is worth investing in solar; or perhaps how much money they will lose from their investment.

I clearly am a 'solar skeptic'.

The problem is that the 'industry' selling Solar riddled with companies who are an absolute disgrace; and subject to more action by trading standards authorities than any other comparable industry.

Why can't these companies state that the savings from your investment of £thousands is measured in £tens?

Surely it is crystal clear that solar DHW heating makes no sense in economic terms!!

I doubt, Cardew that the coventional and traditional forms of heating pay for themselves.
£3000 to £5000 for a gas central heating radiator system is outrageous. Compared to a coal burning open fire it's a financial non starter.
And with the environment in danger, it's a new ball game.
Perhaps the scientists and economists should be re-assessing the way we think.
Do you yourself want to go back to an open fire drawing in the draughts, and ice on the inside of the single glazed windows overnight.

I was forced to fork out for a HIP as I'm having to sell mums 2 bed bungalow to fund her care home costs (rant for another day).
The energy certificate was surprisingly accurate in assessing current lighting and heating costs i.e Lighting £23, Heating £288, Hot water £58.
What was interesting was that it also estimates the annual savings that could be achieved with Solar PV and Solar water heating.
These were: Solar PV 25% of roof area £47 a year.
    Solar Water heating........wait for it............£11 a year.
BTW increasing the loft insulation to 250 mm(from 100mm) was estimated to save £16 a year

So may be get yourself an energy certificate to see the huge savings you could make, only cost me £370!!
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I have 1,000s of spreadsheet rows and some embryonic calcuations which I would like to prove, disprove or improve. I hoped an off-line discussion could yield one of these. I would like to share the analysis method once it is sound so others can laugh or marvel at the results.
