For Anyone Attending Coventry County Court

Hi All.

Now i'm not as eloquent as the wife so bear with me :p

First of all directions are as follows:

Exit junction 5 of coventry ring road following signs for city centre.
once you are off the roundabout turn right at first set of lights past little park street police station. Take the next right and follow the road round to the left at the bottom and the court is on your left. it shares the building with the crown court but you will see the entrance you need clearly marked.

Car Parking:

The nearest car park is right behind the police station but is very tiny and had no spaces for us.

The next one is the multistorey which is straight on at the lights taking your next left then left again this quite busy too but you should get a space on the 7th floor! ( You can see the pub from ere! )

Next one is the barracks which is straight on at the lights then right at the next lights follow the road under the tunnel then round to the left.

The barracks is the furthest away but still no more than 10 minutes at a gentle gallop.

Once inside the foyer of the court you will see 2 security men to your right operating 2 scanning machines you will be required to empty your pockets/ wallets/handbags/asda shopping bags of anything metallic ie keys change mobile phones etc. Then simply walk through the scanner and pick your belongings up on the other side.

When you have finished here take the door to your right which takes you into a communal area with people waiting for judges etc. There are toilets to your right at this point. Then you need to go through a door located in the middle of the opposite wall where you will see three kiosk type things! you want the first one. If no one is there ring the bell ( which is located on the first kiosk desk ) and someone will come out to you.

We sat there for about 10 minutes then a guy called marcus ( who was very friendly and extremely professional ) called us into another small room. He first went through our paperwork with us checking all was ok. He then went away and checked our claim forms for the court fee which we qualified for:D ( all this took about 55 minutes for the both of us )

He then went through the procedure with us then took us back out to the kiosk area where we handed over our cash.

Then we were taken into another room ( again a communal waiting area just off the other waiting area ) where we waited for around half an hour until an usher came and escorted us to the Judge.

The Judge's room was little more than a big office with a big desk really not at all intimidating.

The judge asked us to sit and went through my paperwork first he asked me a few questions ( nothing horrible ) and declared me bankrupt at 11:22am.

Then he went onto Scarletts paperwork and asked her a few questions ( again nothing horrible ) and declared her bankrupt at 11:27am. We were probably in there no more than 15 minutes and the judge was a fantastic bloke very sympathetic very professional just generally very nice as were all the court staff.

We then went back into the kiosk room where we waited for Marcus to take us into the small room where he gave us our paperwork back with our case nos on and the OR phone number then we were free to leave.

We got our proper bankruptcy notices through the post this morning so i rang the OR office ( as they didn't call us yesterday ) and i'm just waiting now for the OR to ring me back ( gulp ) but the lady on the phone was very nice so i'm quite calm about it all honest!.

The whole thing too around 2 hours as there were 2 of us.

All in all if it wasn't for the seriousness of the occasion it would have been a cracking day out.:D

So anybody attending this court please do not worry just be yourselves and although you won't enjoy it of course it is 100 times better than i'd ever imagined.

  • I went BR there in oct and it was exactly how you described!

Marcus was a sound bloke who didn't make you feel guilty or anything, told you what was going to happen, and that they were doing four BR's a day, and there was a constant demand for them!

one thing that did happen though was the judges go for dinner at 1, so when i got to see judge at 12.55 they'd just gone on lunch, so had to kill an hour! after dinner i was first one in, and like you said it was like a fairly big office, not all wooden panels as i first thought! and he didnt have a wig!!

i did notice the tape player recording in background though, and every time you spoke you could see the little green and red lights flickering behind the judge!

all the judge wanted to know really was how i'd got into difficulties, and when i said about the kids, new house and consolidation he said "that always seems to be the one that gets people into debt!"

all in all pretty painless, and the OR all seem ok to be honest, i know of four people who have gone BR in my area and they have had no problems at all! touch wood!!!

anyway thought i'd add my bit!
  • Hi dappanumber1

Nice to 'see' another Coventry person :D

Marcus was great wasn't he? Very reassuring and kind. He told us yesterday that they're now fully booked until the end of April; so anyone who is planning on going to Coventry should get booking their date pretty soon.

Ooooh, I didn't notice the tape recorder. Then again, apart from when I was speaking to the judge I spent the whole time staring at the floor, trying to stop myself shaking :o

  • i come from hinckley, so not quite in coventry! but i was advised by cab that cov is so much better than the leicester one, as she had a few people coming back complaining about how they were treated! it seems everyone in hinckley has been advised to head to cov for bankruptcy now!:D

spose its better than going there to watch the football team though ;)
