mobile phones

Hi all
Just thought i'd add my opinion of mobile phones:
3/4 years ago me and the wife had the latest mobile phones on contract. At the time we thought that they were a necessity believing that by loosing them would leave us vunerable. Lets be honest advertising tells us this! Since that time we can say that except for 3 (three) occations (all 3 were to say that we will be late) we havn't needed them. Cannot count the number of times people have said to us: No mobile phone, how do you cope? How do we get intouch with you? Our reply is usually the same "use the land line"
What about my kids they need to contact me when they are out?
Do what we did, If they were at a friends make them phone at surtain times (land line). if they were out playing make them come back regularly. If theyed gone somewhere a time and a place to pick them up! Boy did they get a rocket if they didn't.
So my question to you is do you really need mobile phones or is there another way. Break the habit of falling for consumerisum. Use the money another way.
Just a thought:beer:

Have to agree with everything above ! :T
I have had the same mobile for the last 7 years (on PAYG) and only top up about £10 every 6 months !
I get 5 free texts per day (which i rarely use)
All my friends have horendous contracts for £25 - £40 per month and all the latest phones ... well mine still texts the wife when im gonna be late and phones the AA if the car brakes down ! :rotfl:
Why do we feel we need the latest phone with 60,000 free mins and 50,000 free tests ??? its ridiculous
They all justify it in their heads by telling themselves .. 'I'm a heavy user texting my friends and calling my family so its cheaper if i get a huge contract with free calls !!! NEWSFLASH - They arnt FREE !!! you pay £40 per month for them !!!
Sorry rant over ! but these mobile companys are bloodthirsty !LBM - 20/05/07Well that all went FUBAR0 -
I like my phone. I can use it in the car. I don't need to carry money to use it plus I can play games on it.
Sure, I could cope without it, but then again i could cope with an Ipod and i still have one. Life isn't always about coping, sometimes convenience is good
By staying with one firm, i've managed to keep my contract costs low (negotiated a 35 pound contract down to 20 quid a month + free phone)0 -
Im also Pay as you go convert...I get 300 free txts a month (which I can carry over until they are used up)... I top up £10 about every 2 months or so...BOI Credit Card = Was £3500.00 Now £0.00
GE Capital Store Card= Was £1800.00 Now £0.00
GE Capital Store Card = Was 1300.00 Now £0.00
Credit Union Savings Now £200.00 :T0 -
Both me and my hubby barely use our mobiles but my daughter is just turned 11 and has to utilise council buses to and from school, so we felt better her having a mobile she only gets £10 a month top up and if she don't use it we top it up when it runs out just never more than £10 in a month.
Personally I hate being so contactable and don't give my mobile number to anyone but the privileged few!0 -
Hi Kel,
You are so right! Go back 10/15 years in time - you'd ring someone (Landline) and if they didn't answer they where out / busy / couldn't be bothered to pick up the phone.
These days my Mum will ring the home number and if she gets no answer will ring my mobile. If she still gets no answer she will then ring DH's mobile.
If there is still no answer (because sometimes we really are busy and I refuse to be a slave to a ringing phone), she clearly believes that we have been clubbed & bludgoened to death by a manianc intruder and prepares to call the police!

It's lovely that she cares but surely sometimes we should remember that mobile phones are not a true 'essential', if it's inmportant, they'll ring back!Debt @ LBM - 15th Dec 07 = £33,223 / 9 weeks on = £32,130 (over 1k paid off)

If I did not have my phone I would lose business as I am not office based.
I use it for calls and texts, and also to take pictures of places I am working which saves me having to carry a camera.
Bottom line - if I didn't have a mobile I would lose income.0 -
I have said for a few years that I am sick of having a phone.. you go out for the night, miss a call and all of a sudden people are texting you saying 'why havn't you answered, i'm worried, are you ok' etc etc.. jeeez, can't I have a day off?!
Since my bankruptcy, I decided to ditch the contract and have a PAYG, I top up £10 a month so far, but I have about £7.50 left until the end of the month and I don't think I will be using it... So hopefully I can get that down.
I think it is handy for emergencies to be fair. But then emergencies don't happen all that often and I would rather spend my money on smoke alarms and other safety things for life emergencies.. rather than a flat tyre or being late.

I think it depends - I do have a mobile, and pay £50 a month for contract. But I need it for work, and in my area, have to be contactable, and a lot of my usage is a tax-deductable work expense....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

I used to have a contract mobile and it cost me a fortune! I now have a PaYG with Tescos whereby if you top up £15 a month the texts and calls are cheaper but if you top up automatcially online you get 10% off so I pay £13.50 a month for my mobile.0

I hate mobile phones, I dislike the idea people can get hold of you almost every minute of the day. I will cancelling my and my OH contracts when they are up and we will not be taking out any more contracts..."it's good to talk"....no it's not, have you heard the people on the bus using a mobile "I'm on the bus, what do you fancy for tea?" Really there is no need for these types of conversation, lets all go back to how it was 10/15 years ago, and let me enjoy my bus journey in peace.
