Hi, I have been given a price for two new tyres for my vehicle, the brand I have been offered are " Federal ".
Can any one in the know, tell me if this brand of tyre is a good long lasting one or are they a poor quality one in terms of how many miles they will last.
Many thanks

check etyres.co.uk. This was recommended from this site. Also, continental. They will all come out and install tyres for you.
Never heard of federal.Motto: 'If you don't ask, you don't get!!'

Toyo is a good make of tyres , my other half has them on his Subaru Impreza and the handling is outstanding . Continentials like the other person said are good , Michelin as well . Most of the unheard of tyres are made by the big names anyway . Ask your tyre guy who makes Federals and go from there .Baby Thomas born 3 months early by emergency section on 21/1/09 weighing 1lb 15ozs .
Thomas came home after 3 months and 2 days in hospital weighing 5lb 15ozs
Thomas weighed 21lb 4ozs on his 1st birthday , a total weight gain of 18lbs 5ozs !

Federal are considered budget tyres from Australia (made in Taiwan) early development came with support from a few of the bigger names like Dunlop back in the 80's and 90's.
The only thing I think about when buying tyres is that they are what keeps the car on the road, personally I beleive you get what you pay for and would never put budget tyres on my car even if I was selling the car.
A few reviews on them say the walls are soft so lots of lateral movement which isnt good, they are inexpensive and wear reasonably well but cheap tyres usually do as they use a harder compound to increase the life the result is road noise and some people don't like that. harder compounds also result in reduced grip especially when they are cold and in the wet.
It just depends what you are looking for, good performance or cheap. Its better to get somthing that will perform better and pay more than scrimp and only find out the limit of the tyre when your in a bush or the back of another car.0 -
Hi Bigted
I agree with Little John - going for ultracheap tyres could be a false economy.
The experts are over on the motoring & public transport board - if you post the size of tyre you are looking for, they will come up with some sensible options.0 -
Try Blackcircles.com
you can buy big name decent tyres for not much more. Cheap tyres can be OK, but a lot are rubbish.
I uses to use Goodyear F1s (big name performance tyres), but recently tried some Kumho Ecstas and have been very impressed.Happy chappy0 -
Depends on the car really but I tend to stick to Goodyear F1's/ Pirelli P Zero/Toyo Proxies/Yokohama Parada SpecDebt Free Marathon: Start 01/06/09 £16714 - Current Position £14514 - Finish Line Xmas 20100

Blackcircles.com and also use it through a cashback site, most are doing 4% back at the moment I think. Grip and longevity are inversely proportional so the better the grip the quicker they wear, the best tyres have the best proportion.. so poor tyres may grip well but not last long, or last for ages but have no grip!0

Not sure which size you need but in the 'which' test best buys were:
196/65/15
Bridgestone Turanza ER300
Pirelli P6
Continental ecocontact 2
Vredestein sporttrac 3
175/65/14
Pirelli Cinturato P4
Continental Ecocontact 3
Fulda ecocontrol
I can recommend the ER300's as thats what i've had on for the past year or so.0
