Retirement - question regarding how to inform the employer

Can anyone help. My mother in law is turning 60 at the beginning of April, and is looking to retire,, as she is fully entitled to. She called her personnel department, who said that she is not retiring, it is simply leaving, therefore needs to submit it in writing - is this correct

With the way things have changed, I would imagine her company no longer have a compulsory retirement age so she would. It's only a simple letter.

    Hi
From my experience, managers are notified by HR when the person hits the big 60 or 65; depending on gender. It is usually the line manager who would discuss with the person what their intentions are and if they are going to continue to work.
But, as Conor says, in this day and age where nobody seems to be allowed to enjoy the actual philosophical treat of 'retirement', then a letter stating that she is retiring should be sent, much as a letter of resignation. However, it would be one tight wad company who don't help her to end her career in a way that she deems appropriate [so more than the usual leaving 'do].

I hope she enjoys her retirement, I still have 20 odd years to go unfortunately! Much as I love my job...it will probably be 30+ years if the gvt have their way.
