I would more than likely think this was to do with benefit fraud, i have reported someone for benefit fraud and they wanted to know absolutely everything. The car they drive, what they look like, what time they leave for work etc...... They then covertly spy on them to see if indeed they are working. So this is more than likely what it was.

And before anyone rants, i think i was entitled to report them to the benefit fraud office as they were working full time, claiming hundreds of benefits and getting over £1500 a month in total. And no they didnt need the money.

Also about the National Statistics Office, I have done a survey for them, they send you a letter first and then call round sometime. Then a year later they call back or phone you up to see if anything has changed, cos that then becomes a statistic. ie. if we had moved and someone else lived here they would then interview them, as this shows them roughly how often people move house etc....

i never tell anything about anyone at the door after all its none of my buisness and i truly dont know anything about the man, but i did wonder if maybe he is a suspect suicide bomber and maybe thats what they were trying to find out info for.and why would you ask a neighbour and not the man himself.

I didnt think it would be legal to do this to be honest, it might have been a debt collector trying to get information (they have been known to call people's neighbours trying to get info etc). If it was a legitimate government statistical inspector, well, they should be asking the guy in question, not fishing for hearsay or your opinions on what goes on with him. If it was government/police related etc and not simply statistical info, then they should have told you the purpose of finding the information about your neighbour.

Seems well odd to me, and tbh - if someone was at my door asking questions about a neighbour, id tell em to p**$ off, as I wouldnt want one of my neighbours, who doesnt know me, saying,

"yeah, well, I dont know that much about her, but I know she drives a green car, and shops in Sainsburys by looking at her carrier bags. Would seem she has a cat too from what she buys. And, she doesnt make an effort in her appearance when she goes shopping, I always see her with no make-up on, sunglasses and the oddest clothing. Looks like pyjamas."

I mean - in this day and age, of data protection, and civil liberties, and right to privacy and family life etc etc, I would see these kind of questions as intrusive and strange. Now, im all for catching the criminals and dont disagree with ID cards either, however, my bank doesnt call my neighbour, and neither should anyone else with respect to my personal business. If it is the police however and want information regarding a suspect already arrested who happens to be my neighbour, by all means I would help with the inquiries, and keep strictly to fact, not supposition.

I think you did right by not giving them any information, but by the sounds of it, you dont sound as if you would actually know that much anyway if he is a bit reclusive!

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

    Good post Shrek101.

Who can honestly say they know what a genuine Gas Elec water etc ID looks like.

I certainly don't, If they showed me at the door I WOULD PROBABLY LET THEM IN :(

Most IDs nowadays will also provide a phone number you can use to check out the 'visitor'. You could still verify this via the phone book or a website before giving a visitor access to your home or divulging any information.
