Looking at it from the angle of a disabled household (hubby receives full DLA, so I know the extra expenses that can occur)

Have you looked into carers allowance for your daughter? I'm not sure how it works for children, but if you qualify, it's another £48.65 a week. It is accounted for in Tax Credit calculations, but is not so huge an amount that it cancels itself out. Looking at your income, you won't qualify, but I don't know if it would be worth your OH applying (afraid I don't know how it affects JSA.

Also, if any part of the house is designed/allocated specifically for your daughter (physio room?), or the house is adapted for access, then you could qualify for a council tax reduction (sorry, don't want to pry, but going by the figure you get, I assume the disability isn't mild).

I would agree that the shopping bill could be significantly reduced (or are there special items in the budget?)

Fuel is high, as already said, although I can understand that you may not have a choice (we can't get our combined below £110 a month even with all the energy saving bits because of the need to heat the house constantly). Obviously check for the cheapest supplier, but also look into schemes like Warmfront who may be able to get you better insulation etc and hence reduce future bills.

You may be able to get your water bill (which seems high) reduced - look into the vulnerable household scheme - it's income and needs based, and usually caps your bill at around £250 a year.

To me it looks like your child gets middle rate or above of DLA then your partner can claim carers allowance.
Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!
  • right my little girl has just turned 3 yr old and she was diagonosed with type 1 diabetes not long before x mas, that is what we cliam DLA for, partner also diabetic but dont think we can claim any thing for that, the reason why gas and electric are so high are because we are on pre payment meter!
petrol so high because i work 45 mins away from where i live,
childcare is cheapest in my area, plus both kids happy there,
the loan what i pay my parents is from debt i had a few yr ago and they bailed me out, the debt i have now is what was left and couldn't be paid off with the loan that my parents got me
as my daughter and partner are diabetic they require differnet things in there diet so therefore cant really cut down on shopping plus both kids in nappies on a night and youngest still in nappies through day, already swapped to cheapest brand
personal loan is with welcome finance so APR high £ 2600 and odd still to pay
    overdraft 1 £350 left
    overdraft 2 £220 left
    Overdraft 3 £425 left
    Catalogue £ 1700 left
    Catalogue £900 left

feel stuck in a rut, wanted to get 1 loan and pay everything off including car on finance s just had 1 payment but after been messed about by natwest it was eventually declined
  • Sam - thanks for you reply - firstly please do not for one moment think that I am having a go cos I am not!!

My Eldest daughter has Cystic Firborsis and needs nearly double the calories than you or me!!! MacDonalds would be a perfect diet for her!! However, I still manage to feed two adults, two girls 13 & 10, three border collies and a cat for a maximum of £240 oh and Bob the fish but he cost me about £1.89 a year!!! It does take harder work at the beginning but it soon becomes habit and there are rarely bits ever thrown away.

If your OH has Diabetes Type 1 as well, I would not be surprised if you were not entitled to some help and him even to DLA as well.

I will go back over your SOA and what your debts are and try and work some bits and pieces for you.

    Hug
