Purchase Activation Fee

Hi,

Anyone know anything about so-called "purchase activation fees"? My wife is just coming to the end of a hire purchase agreement for a car, and she has just received a letter saying that "if your agreement started on or after the 31st May 2005" (which, of course, it did - if only a couple of weeks after), "please note that a 'Purchase Activation fee' of £75 will be applied. This additional fee will be debited from your account along with your final Payment, and will complete the purchase of your vehicle."

As far as we can tell, there is no reference to this in the original agreement, so it strikes us a complete con. Anyone know if this is remotely legit? Can they really do this?

Many thanks in advance.

  • Just ask them to send you a copy of the original documentation highlighting this fee. All I would say is that this type of fee is very common in Car HP and therefore not surprised that you would have to pay it.
